1. Paste svg content from clipboard, not underlying xml content

   There are several design tools that can put SVG text on the clipboard including Illustrator. Please support pasting that content from the clipboard as content, not xml text. XD does this correctly, so Illustrator should too.

2. Search for text on artboard/canvas

   I know illustrator has good navigation features. But when designer provide project files to client for example on envato market. First pain for client is to understand document patterns. I want to make help instruction inside illustrator document but search feature is required to navigate to different sections.

   For example: 1000+ icon set, search is required for such big documents.

3. Text thread marker (out port) is too small

   The size of the red controller [+] which allows you to create a new threaded text is so small that is almost impossible to click. I think it could be bigger in order to improve the usability. In fact, many of those options can be bigger.

6. Artboard delete tool

   This is really nitpicky but the little X at the top right of the artboard tool is too small and more often than not I end up creating a new artboard around the object at the top right of the artboard. Possibly make the cross larger or move it somewhere else to remove this problem?

7. Image Crop Feature

   This is a bug with regards to Image crop feature in Illustrator.

   While I try to unembed a cropped image (in Illustrator) and link to a PSD source file, the source PSD file gets flattened or layers get merged to a single layer. The source PSD file gets altered and damaging it.

8. Save to older version of EPS or AI

   CS6 does not appear to allow the user to save to older versions of EPS or AI. Many vendors and designers are still using older versions, and the inability to save to older versions is creating a lot of problems.

   It should be possible to do so through File > Save As… then select the Format as .ai or .eps, then click Save. In the next dialog select the desired version from CC to Ai3.

10. Illustrator - Trace image and turn in to an editable path instead of shapes

    I would love to be able to take my drawings and use the live trace feature (or maybe even a feature within the Illustrator app??) that would allow me to trace my hand-drawn sketches (on paper) and turn them into line paths instead of outlined shapes. This way, I don't have to trace my images again, once they are in Illustrator. It would be a huge time saver!

    There are options for image tracing in AI. Extended panel gives you an ability to select Strokes instead of Fills. Tweaking these can help you with that. Please comment back if you think these should be refined.

11. Enable Illustrator to retain the filenames of placed SVGs or EPS files when shift+dragging them to the canvas from Explorer or Finder..

    GOAL:

    I am in the process of re-coloring an SVG icon set that has 155 separate SVGs, and I want to then re-export all the modified icons with their original filenames. Unfortunately this appears to be impossible because Illustrator just assigns generic "<group>" names to every placed object.

    STEPS:

    • I place all SVGs I want to recolor into a new document by shift+dragging them from windows explorer to my open document.
    • After this action, all placed SVGs just get a generic name like “<group>”.

    PROBLEM:

    This is a nightmare, because I have to now rename all of the new SVG files back to their original names after exporting my changes.

    PROPOSAL:

    When shift+dragging external vector artwork (SVG, EPS, etc) to the canvas to place it in a document, Illustrator should NAME EACH PLACED FILE according to its actual filename on disk.

    SIDE NOTE:

    If Illustrator named each object that was placed to its original filename, the process of then renaming the artboards themselves to the correct filenames is easy, as there are multiple scripts out there that move objects to artboards and can rename artboards according to the names of the items that are moved.

13. More intelligent document setup

    When starting a new document, color mode RGB, for some reason, the swatches palette is populated with CMYK swatches, and the Black swatch is not 0,0,0. Please make this more relevant: When RGB is chosen, the user wants Black to be RGB Black.
    Also, let the user choose a background color to represent Alpha (just like After Effects does), or two checkerboard colors.

14. Use full height of the monitor

    It would be nice to have a setting to let Illustrator use the monitor more efficient. Especially the tool palette could contain more tools visible on most big screens.

    I would like data fields to be sufficiently wide that all digits and units are visible. For example, the Transform Window's X, Y, W and H fields, along with all the others. In addition to being able to see all data at a glance, this would make pasting values into the field much easier because prior to pasting you click once or more to select the current data. Being able to see the entire field allows visual confirmation of what you are about to replace. It is not usual to get tripped up by inadvertently including or excluding the units, which are frequently hidden.

16. Line Cut Tool for Adobe Illustrator

    I would like to suggest a new tool for Adobe Illustrator called “Line Cut”.

    The concept is very simple: the user draws a straight line across any selected object, and Illustrator cuts the object along that line from one edge to the other.

    The tool should work with:

    • Vector shapes;
    • Compound paths;
    • Groups;
    • Text converted to outlines;
    • Multiple selected objects;
    • Placed or embedded raster images.

    For example, if I have a rectangle and draw a line through its middle, the tool would immediately divide the rectangle into two independent objects.

    The same concept should work with irregular vector shapes: the line would intersect the object and Illustrator would automatically calculate the intersections and create the resulting separate pieces.

    For raster images, the tool could divide the image into separate cropped sections while preserving the original resolution.

    Ideally, the workflow would be:

    1. Select one or more objects.
    2. Activate the Line Cut Tool.
    3. Draw a straight line across the objects.
    4. Illustrator automatically calculates the intersections.
    5. The objects are divided into separate pieces.

    Additional options could include:

    • Horizontal, vertical, or free-angle cuts;
    • Cutting multiple objects at once;
    • Holding Shift to constrain the cutting angle;
    • Keeping both resulting pieces;
    • Option to delete one side immediately;
    • Support for repeated cuts.

    This would be particularly useful for graphic designers and print-production users who frequently need to divide artwork quickly.

    The main advantage would be speed and simplicity: instead of manually using Pathfinder, Shape Builder, clipping masks, or other workarounds, the user could simply draw a line and cut the artwork.

    Illustrator & Adobe Stock Integration

    Observation | A User may download and insert a comp image from Adobe Stock into their project while awaiting client image approval, however, relinking the file is a long an unnecessarily tedious process.

    Behaviour | The User places the comp Adobe Stock image into their project. The client approves the images. The User clicks the ReLink button, copies the comp image ID number from the filename in the top left of the screen, navigates to stock.adobe.com, pastes in the filename ID number and searches for the image. The User then downloads the high resolution image, navigates back to Illustrator and Relinks the placeholder to the new image.

    Expected Behaviour | Client approves the placeholder comp image. The User, while in Illustrator, selects the linked image in the Links Panel and presses the Adobe Stock button. Illustrator scans the filename for the ID number and links directly to Adobe Stock. An Adobe Stock window appears in Illustrator and the User is given the opportunity to download the file or to download and automatically insert the Adobe Stock Image as a Relinked file with the file that was selected.

19. The transparent areas of (point) text boxes should not be selectable.

    It is difficult / impossible to select any object below any portion of a (point type) text box, even when the area under the cursor is completely empty / transparent. In the attached screenshot examples, the pink line is not selectable because it is covered by a text box, even when there are no active pixels or vector data under the cursor within the text area. No other objects in Illustrator behave this way. Transparency is supposed to be non selectable. Illustrator treats the entire text box as an object with a fill, even though text boxes completely lack a fill attribute. This is especially frustrating since a text box is necessarily bigger than the physical bounds of the actual visible characters.

    I would like to suggest a change to the type settings to introduce a check box for 'type selectable by character only.' The current setting of 'type selectable by path only' is practically unusable since it refers not to the character paths, but to the baseline, which is effectably an imaginary and invisible line which isn't actually a path anyways. While it's true that live type doesn't have paths until its expanded, it seems apparent that the software knows where the paths theoretically are since all live type is visible in outline mode.

    This simple update to the type setting would give users two clear options to choose from: type is either selectable by the entire text frame ~or~ is selectable only by the outlines of the text.

20. Let me see how many paths are in my document once all the appearances are processed.

    I do a lot of crazy things with the Appearance palette. Sometimes it's really easy for me to start generating absolutely apocalyptic numbers of paths without realizing it, and make Illustrator start acting really weird in seemingly unrelated places.

    I would love it if the preview renderer (both cpu and gpu!) kept track of how many paths it is actually rendering once all the effects on all the paths in the documents are handled, and alerted me when I start getting into catastrophically huge numbers of paths. The threshold where this starts happening should be user-configurable, so it can be tuned for the limitations of my current computer.

    Also it would be nice to have this number available in the Objects section of the Document Info window next to the number of paths. I shouldn't have to expand every appearance in my document to discover that its 2.4k paths turn into about 10.5k paths once all the effects and blends and brushes and whatnot are processed.
