An error occurred while saving the comment Lisa, this is extremely odd and feels completely broken. Can you record a video of you trying to use it?

An error occurred while saving the comment James, can you package the project you have problems with via File > Package and email the archive to sharewithai@adobe.com, including the link to this report (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/44478717)?
The team will check if something specific breaks it. -

An error occurred while saving the comment Willem, did you save your files to the cloud or to the disk?
Ai should have gave you a choice, displaying a large dialog with two quite colorful images about that.
If cloud — please check https://assets.adobe.com — can you see your files there?
If disk — search your system for *.ai files and sort results by date. -

An error occurred while saving the comment Machiel, it feels like the mask is unlinked for one of your sub-objects.
But it can be something else for sure.
Can you share the file and record a short video that demonstrates the issue? Nothing can be done without a real case, because it behaves fine for me. -

An error occurred while saving the comment Gebhardt, this needs further explanations I’m afraid.
Can you show some examples of shapes and photos you want Ai to cut out for you? -

The problem was in a modified default Character / Paragraph Style. Please refer to comments for the details.
An error occurred while saving the comment Jean Carlos, did you change the default Character Style in the dedicated panel in all the document profile file as well? This is the only place that is responsible for this.
Search for them here: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 26 Settings\en_US\x64\New Document Profiles but change the username and the version accordingly.
Please comment back if it helps. -

An error occurred while saving the comment Mark, reversing path direction can be done with a script. They don't drop now from actions, so this thing, at least, can be automated. Anyway, this task should be accessible from the box, sure.
Edited: and it is now! Check Object > Path > Reverse Path Direction -

An error occurred while saving the comment Works fine for me, but I am on Windows.
What happens when you try it, Larry? -

An error occurred while saving the comment Wow, this sounds tough.
What about Open? or Effects > Document Raster Effects Settings?
A naïve guess would be you have a problem with an Enter key... but this would also spam tool’s options for you. Still please check it. -

The bug is no longer a problem in latest Illustrator releases. If you ever encounter this problem ever again, please comment back.
An error occurred while saving the comment I confirm that and I had it for several versions already and even reported internally.
Thank you for logging it in publicly.
It means I am not the only one having this! It’s quite easy to replicate it:
1. Make sure Align panel is collapse or hidden.
2. Relaunch Ai
3. Create a Print document, metric based
4. Expand Align panel
Now, if you create two objects and click one to set it as a key, the Distribute Spacing value displays no units! And if you type 1 in it, it applies 1pt instead of 1mm.
And if you type specifically '1mm' in it, Ai dings at you and doesn’t accept the value!A workaround I know is to create a new document with the panel visible. Sometimes I am lucky to get it fixed in place, after fiddling with undo and cursing aloud.

An error occurred while saving the comment In 24.1.3 units appear later and then stay.
Also I noticed that after initial entering the value Ai recalculates it, presumably from points into mm, resulting a different value. An error occurred while saving the comment

Illustrator TeamAn error occurred while saving the comment Does Ai freeze though? Or just do nothing?
Does the asterisk in the document’s tab disappear when you initiate Save?
Are you able to Save a copy? -

An error occurred while saving the comment A dedicated team, that has no influence over 'real' technical problems that other dedicated teams are in charge of, make these changes happen.
My task, for example, is to validate requests and help devs to prioritize resources.
Your request ...is not that useful. Still I respond you! :)
And as far as I know, Illustrator never made changes about inclusivity... InDesign did, replacing 'masters' with 'parents'. So it's a double miss.
If you have other, valid ideas, — please share them or vote for those you find impactful.
