Background Grid Not Displayed Behind Fully Opaque Objects in Illustrator 30.0
I am experiencing an issue in Illustrator 30.0 where the background grid does not appear behind any objects that have 100% opacity, regardless of fill or effects. This happens even when Overprint Preview is enabled. This kind of phenomenon did not occur while using 28.x and 29.x series.
- Illustrator version: 30.0
- OS: macOS Sequoia (15.3.2)
- Issue: Any object with 100% opacity completely hides the background grid.
- Troubleshooting steps attempted:
- Switching GPU performance ON/OFF
- Using CPU preview
- Resetting Illustrator preferences
- Switching to Outline view and back

Background option for thumbnail view when saving vectors, especially white vectors
When a user goes through the save options on the pop-up window, it would be nice to add a feature that lets one select a background color for the thumbnail image. My reason for this is so my white vector files do not disappear on a white background. That would be great for me as a designer. The real trick would be if this thumbnail could also be viewed by anyone on their computer. White logos and icons I develop are passed off to clients or internal team members. Seeing that thumbnail can eliminate doubt and questions about the image…

Guys, why don't you have a "Behance Project" on the New document screen? This should help a lot.

4 votes -
Update / Preview Grid on canvas when the grid and Constrain Angle values change in Preferences, before hitting OK
I use grids all the time and I have to change the grid settings to fit my tasks regularly.
When I do this, the rendered grid updates only when I hit OK, and it makes choosing the step less convenient — if I’m not happy with the resulting grid cell size, I’d have to open Prefs one more, navigate to the section, try again.
Same goes with Constrain Angle — changing it won’t make the grid rotate until OK is hit.
Sure, it’d need a Preview option, to fit the way it works in other dialogs, enabled by default.2 votes -
Change layer thumbnail background so white objects are visible in the Layers panel
Currently, I'm working with white text for a logo design and because the layer thumbnail background is white and the text is also white, it is impossible to see what objects are in my Layers. Illustrator for ipad already has this feature, so why isn't it in desktop?

Control which tool is activated by the eraser end of my stylus
I do all my work with a drawing stylus and have never found the native Eraser tool to be useful. Instead I use Astute's Opacity Brush, which lets you quickly paint opacity masks for the selected objects.
I'd love to be able to access it by flipping my stylus over and eraser-clicking, but that only gets the Eraser tool.
Before the Opacity Brush came up I've had other thoughts for this - how about assigning the eraser end of the stylus to your favorite selection tool instead of constantly hitting hotkeys to switch to and from it, for instance?

One-Click Unit / Resolution Preset Switching (Print/Web)
As a designer working across both print and web media, I’d like to propose a feature that would greatly improve workflow efficiency in applications like Illustrator and Photoshop.
A one-click unit preset switcher that allows users to toggle between unit / ppi settings optimized for different use cases.
For example:
Print preset: mm, 300dpi
Web preset: px, 72dpiThis could be a simple toggle in the toolbar or a quick-access dropdown in the settings panel.

Easier access to Tools
Please rework the tools palette. Some ideas:
make it easy to use the full height of the monitor to show more tools
make it possible to select / activate tools directly through the All Tools overview, even when they are already loaded in the tools palette. It's inconvenient and annoying to watch an icon blink and then have to go into that to select a hidden tool.
make it possible to drag tools from All Tools that are already in the tools palette. Dragging should result in the desired tool on the desired spot, and remove it from the other…

Display the confirmation when a HEX value is copied from the Color panel
Today, when we click the dedicated button to copy a HEX value, either in the Color panel or in Swatches Options dialog, Illustrator selects the value (and copies it), but the fact it gets copied is nowhere stated.
I’d use the Ai’s 'shy message' to inform the users about this instead ( '#XXYYZZ copied') and would not select the value — but would select it by clicking the '#' symbol instead, to match the 'click the caption to select the value' paradigm Illustrator uses in all other fields.2 votes -
Ruler & Grids, Guides, Snap options as separate panel
There are already UI elements for changing these settings, but they're only available in the properties panel with the selection tool selected and no object selection – which is very inconvenient.
Make them a separate panel instead.

Allow to customize the Contextual Task Bar
I want to be able to customize the Contextual Task Bar, add the functions I need to the panel (tools, menus, actions, scripts, etc.). Please add a configurator like in the toolbar.

Allow to reset the position of a single panel, not the full workspace
Reset Workspace for me is mostly used to get all the panels I torn out from docks to get back in their stables.
But sometimes it’s just one panel, and waiting for Ai to creak and choke just to get one panel back is an overkill.
And putting it back manually is not as simple as sounds — my memory remembers where it should BE, not where it should be PUT in!
So can we get a way to force one chosen panel to be reset? 'You — go home'! I’d use it rather often.3 votes -
Artboards panel scrolls too fast when using touchpad / trackpad
The fact that we have to test our timing when dragging the artboards to organize them in the Artboards panel is silly. I spent a whole minute trying to arrange the artboards for the storyboard with the trackpad. They should make the scrolling animation slower.

Please make Mirror easier to use
The Mirror tool is such a hassle to use and get it working. People, can you please make it an easy toggle to turn off and on, that you can use right away, similar to programs like Procreate and Clip Studio Paint?

Scaling is messed up for the effect tab and font tab
The effects tab won’t scale to a larger size like 200% when on a small drawing display, the font tab also has problem with not shrinking down and stays too large clipping into the secondary screen. Can you please fix these two things?

Custom Keyboard Shortcuts dialog should highlight changes from defaults
This is such a little thing, but I would love to scroll through my list of keyboard shortcuts and see an indication next to ones I've changed to custom, that are different from the default.

1 voteThere’s no automated condition Illustrator follows for this, we decide ourselves when to turn these off.
We can hide these hints by disabling the Show Rich Tool Tips option in the Preferences > General.

Display 'Save' in those History steps which were followed by saving, as Photoshop does it
It can be hard to navigate History, and when we do, we often need to see specific points of it.
Save operations are important turning points, and seeing 'Save' added to those operations that happened right before saving happened works great... in Photoshop, but not in Illustrator. Please add these.4 votes
