Indeed this is a major fault in Illustrator.
Literally Centuries of Combined time has been wasted waiting for files to save.
The whole file saving / exporting process is in dire need of streamlining.
It is such a laborious process to save multiple files, especially if like me you are saving in both pdf and ai formats.

As an added bonus Illustrator does not remember the last parameters you used when saving or exporting.

Saving should be a 1 or at most 2 step process, and no endless confirmations.

Due to the need to maintain FrameMaker compatibility, I have to do Save As EPS. This adds hugely to the time required for a File Save.

I work in a highly secure environment, and due to our firewall s/w, Illustrator file saves can take as long as THREE MINUTES when in the office. When working remotely, they can take as long as SEVEN MINUTES!

This is time I'd rather be spending doing work, not sitting and twiddling my thumbs...

Tip: Save your Illustrator file with PDF Compatibility disabled (Save As for existing file to access the option). If you have lots of raster effects or imported images those images are embedded at full resolution in the PDF portion of the file, even if they use linked files. I have seen files drop from hundreds of megabytes to two megabytes. When that happens you are not discouraged from saving your file frequently.

The downside is the file is only readable by Illustrator. You can’t rasterize it in Photoshop or place it in InDesign, or even in another Illustrator file. But if you don’t need that, or are willing to disable the option while editing, you can save a lot of disk space and a lot of time.

I have the habit of pressing ctrl+S all the time, but the problem is that illustrator is unresponsive while saving. For some reason Illustrator 'hangs' when saving.

I guess the solution would be to make saving a background process, like in Photoshop (?).

Every time I finish working in Ai for the day, I have to close and save my multiple files I have open - as they are usually quite large, this process can take some time. And because you have to wait for each file to save and close before you can save the next file, it is time consuming, especially as you are trying to rush out the door at the end of the day.

Photoshop allows you to hit save, and then select your other tab and hit save and it will queue up all your saves - how great! You can also continue to work in your file while the document is saving in Photosshop - another great feature.

It would be great if this feature could be included in Illustrator as well.

Yes indeed it is very frustrating waiting for drawings to save, and you are stuck not being able to work on other illustrator files until the last one is saved. A conservative estimate is that I wast about 5 whole days a year waiting for things to save. Multiply this estimate by the thousands of users you are looking at many centuries of valuable work time going down the drain.... Very archaic Software!!
