Remove Local Overrides button for paragraph styles
InDesign has it, Illustrator should too.
Just a single local change, like font colour, and the text looses its paragraph style. The link might still be active since there is a + shown in the paragraph styles window, but changes in the style does not effect the localy changed text anymore. Maybe this is wanted, but I would love a Remove Local Overrides button like the one in InDesign. It resets all local changes and forces the paragraph style back on the text. Even with multiple textboxes with multiple styles selected.6 votes -
Placeholder text relative to your document
When you choose the type tool and click, the placeholder text defaults to 12pt. This means that the text is tiny if you have a large artboard (see attached). It would be cool if the placeholder text was sized relative to your artboard instead, so that it's easy to see and work with.

InCopy Assignments
Just as InDesign lets designers can assign InCopy assignments to text blocks, can the same functionality be done for Illustrator?

"autoflow" feature in Illustrator
To place a docx or a txt file with an "autoflow" feature, like in Indesign. All pages should open all needed artboards.

text align vertically
Allow text to be vertically centered in text box.
In InDesign, there is an option in the text frame properties, "Vertical Justification", with a "Center" option.
Or, the "baseline shift" option could be split into either specifying a number, as it is now, or specifying "center in text box".
This option is very important sometimes, such as having a tag symbol (e.g. circle) with a label inside that is either 1 or 2 lines high. Right now I have to have 2 paragraph styles (1 for 1-line text and 1 for 2-line text) so the 1 line text is in…

Option to disable 'Recent Fonts' feature.
I hate having to scroll from the top of the fonts list every time i'm searching for a new font. Currently, in preferences there is an option for only 1 recent font, however, i'd like to be able to disable this feature completely.

Variable Concept and Legacy Typefaces
The new version of Minion and Myriad are EXCELLENT, and I am very excited by the possibilities that this opens up. But I work in Art production, and for consistency, I need access to the legacy version of these typefaces. May we have access to both?

Adjusting the curve of the "type on the path" and be able to keep the type from distorting
This was actually a feature that USED to work on previous illustrators, since this month's update (October 2018), it stopped working. Basically, you make a circle shape, then you type on a path. But sometimes you want to be able to adjust/transform the curve (while keeping the Type same size and proportion) to see how it would lay without distorting the type. *Not the same as holding shift because that just keeps the curve the same shape, and it also make the type bigger or smaller. Used to be able to resize text back to 100% in a group after stretching it horizontally or vertically.
After stretching a group horizontally or vertically, you used to be able to resize the text back to 100% (aka, revert the weird text stretching while keeping all the objects grouped together). This option seems to be missing after the Ai update! Please give it back!

Typography Swapping Window (just like “Recolor Artwork”
I use Edit>Edit Colors>Recolor Artwork so very often that I have replaced the “Rulers” keyboard shortcut with “Recolor Artwork.”
“Character Styles” and “Paragraph Styles” are invaluable tools, but I REALLY would love to have a dialogue box identical to that of “Recolor Artwork,” except for swapping & changing type, character & paragraph rules/styles. If necessary, I can create a mockup of the UI that I have in my head for this, but I’m not planning to, unless it is necessary.

Fix warp type effects
This has probably be stated before, but has long been an issue with warping text. It plain sucks, especially on an arc unless you use the type on a path tool.
Many moons ago there was a plug-in called Kai's Power Tools, KPT Vector Tools. It worked perfectly with one click and than for those that know Kai the creator vanished and updates were never made. It stopped working at Illustrator 9 for me.
I am sure at Adobe there are many programming geniuses that can make the current warp effects work much better.

Typesetting formulas, mathematical equations and symbols in LaTeX-style
When typesetting mathematical formulas, LaTeX is the way to go and is the standard in many scientific areas. But a problem arises when mathematical symbols should be used in figures. If these figures are e.g. created in Illustrator, it is always a bit inconvenient to include the symbols in the figure. It is e.g. necessary to render the symbols separately and include them as EPS files in Illustrator or the symbols are added later to the figure by another program.
It would be really cool to have a build-in feature in Illustrator which would allow direct typesetting in the common…

Snap textframe size to content (like double-click in InDesign)
A function appreciated by all in InDesign.. doubleclick the side of the boundingbox of a textframe and it snaps/scales immediately to the content.
I'm not talking about Type -> Area Type Options -> Auto-size

This functionality has been shipped in June-2021 version of Illustrator.
The option "Paste without Formatting (Alt+Ctrl+V)’ has been added to the ‘Edit’ Menu.

Perspective distortion of bitmaps and text?
In many other software packages you are able to use perspective distortion on text and bitmaps. This should be a very basic feature of illustrator. This way you can still change the font / text while it is in perspective.

Resize Area Type from Transform Pane
When you try to set a size for an Area Type text in the Transform pane, it currently distorts the text along with changing the size of the area. This strikes me as inconsistent with resizing the area from the bounding box resize handles, and also undesirable (am I missing a use-case where you'd want the text to be distorted in this situation?)
I recently became aware there are width/height inputs in Type > Area Type Options but these are cumbersome.
I propose the Width / Height inputs in the Transform pane behave as in Area Type Options.

Convert text to outlines on open
If fonts are missing on open, give the option to expand/convert to outlines. I work in the sign industry, It is a huge hassle to contact customers to have them convert it and re-send it. They frequently don't know how/didn't make the artwork to begin with. I typically get around this using acrobat watermark trick, but it's very time consuming. We have over 6,000 fonts, and we still have missing fonts all the time.

Like old Macromedia Freehand, It has a mouse drag and hot key to increase the space characters
