Illustrator - Trace image and turn in to an editable path instead of shapes
I would love to be able to take my drawings and use the live trace feature (or maybe even a feature within the Illustrator app??) that would allow me to trace my hand-drawn sketches (on paper) and turn them into line paths instead of outlined shapes. This way, I don't have to trace my images again, once they are in Illustrator. It would be a huge time saver!
3 votesThere are options for image tracing in AI. Extended panel gives you an ability to select Strokes instead of Fills. Tweaking these can help you with that. Please comment back if you think these should be refined.

Make font searching better for designers
Hi Adobe team,
I’m a working designer, and choosing a typeface is one of the most time-consuming parts of nearly every project I do. The font menu has changed very little in twenty years, and I think there’s a real opportunity to make this part of the workflow much better.
The problems I run into every day
The list is hard to browse. The menu window is small, so I can’t see the font names and the results on the page at the same time. Weights and styles shift depending on the family, which makes comparing difficult.
The menu doesn’t remember my place. After I pick a font and reopen the list, I’m back at the top of the alphabet. When I’m comparing candidates, I lose my place every time.
Alphabetical order is not actually a helpful sort. I’m usually looking for a feeling or a function (a warm serif, a tight grotesque, something for a long caption), and the alphabet doesn’t help with that.
Comparing options means duplicating work. To test candidates, I end up making copy after copy of a line of type and swapping fonts one at a time. A project can easily eat hours this way.What I’d love to see
A side-by-side comparison view, where I can pin several fonts and preview them on my own text at the same time.
“Find similar” from any font, so once I’m close, I can explore neighbours instead of starting over.
A choice between large families and single typefaces, since the two often serve very different needs.
A persistent scroll position and recent or shortlisted fonts in the menu, so I don’t lose my place.
A larger, resizable font panel that shows names and live previews together.I appreciate the filters and previews that already exist. They’re useful, and I think they could be the foundation for something much stronger. Anything that makes finding the right font faster would give designers back real time on every job.
Thanks for considering it. I’d be glad to share more about my workflow or test early versions if that would help.

Text in shape
After all these years, have you still not included an easier way to type text in a box!?!?
Darn it! It's so easy in InDesign, why can't you just do that in Illustrator too?
I just want to type in a rectangular box and reshape the text box, with the text inside, without having to take the back route of "appearance." It's so complicated, I keep on forgetting how to use it. !!!!!±!!!!!!!@!@!!!!!!@!We have to take the darn back route of going into appearance and so on. It's pathetic.

Add 'Cancel' option to Turntable
There is no option to cancel Turntable once started. This is incredibly frustrating considering how many different locations the Turntable button is in. I often use the quick reflect buttons on the transform panel and continuously find myself clicking Turntable on accident because it is right below it. I then have to wait up to a minute for Turntable to finish before I can continue working. This also completely wastes my credits every time because the generations are unwanted. Genius business model.
This could also be remedied by moving the Turntable button itself like Ton mentions here. I am all for both:

Text on a circle - with top and bottom arcs of text married together uniformly
Provide a simple text on circle interface that builds text on the top and bottom arcs of a circle. Its is not simple to do this accurately, keeping the circular alignment and the font size the same, using traditional methods. A tool that could marry the top and bottom arcs together, with control of each arc for advanced control, or simply mirroring the top and bottom text arcs in a uniform way would be a great time saver.

Add "type on path" option when you right click on text that is on a path
When I'm working with text that is already on a path, I'd like to be able to right-click to get to the "Type on Path" options. Would be very convenient and faster.

Several last effects used like in Photoshop
Photoshop today remembers 5 last used filters, allowing us to quickly run one from the Filter menu.
Illustrator only offers the last one used only, like Ps used to... a while ago now.

Library assets in Illustrator Should Carry Asset Properties
I would like Library Assets to carry all properties with them when bringing them into open artboards. For example a blue rectangle with a 0.25 pt inside stroke and a name "xyz2" should be just that when imported into a Layer.
Currently "xyz2" comes in as <Clip Group>, with properties of a rectangle clipped together with another rectanglular shape that is not an outline, but an expanded appearance, and now I have three parts instead of one, minus the description.
I'm checking out "xyz2" but getting "x" 'y" "z" "" "2"2 votes -
The invisible 'stroke path' effect in the Appearance stacks of strokes should be made visible.
There is an invisible effect in an Appearance stack on a stroke wherein the stroke is actually rendered along the path. It is possible to place effects above or below this invisible effect by dropping the effect on the stroke's entry or within the stroke's expanded entry.
It is very useful to be able to place effects before or after strokes are rendered, but it's very confusing to deal with when a crucial effect is invisible. If you create and place the effects the wrong way then a list of steps that used to work, or that work for the person who wrote them because they habitually set up effects the other way, then it's insanely frustrating.
I propose that this invisible step should be made visible. I should not have two paths with seemingly-identical appearance stacks and radically different renderings.
Attached: an Illustrator 30.3 file that demonstrates this, documents how to place effects before/after the invisible "stroke path" effect, and has images of how I propose this invisible effect should be made visible.
If there is a corresponding 'fill path' effect hidden in fills, I have not been able to make effects happen after it. It would be pretty neat to have that visible too, I'm sure there's some neat things that could be done with that ability!
EDIT: my initial test case is a little confusing since it uses a brush; I went back and recreated the example I helped diagnose that shows that this is going on with simple strokes as well as complex ones. I've also added a couple of images.

Display a warning about missing fonts when saving a file
Display a warning when saving a file if there is a font issue—either via a pop-up or perhaps during the saving process, similar to the warning about pixelation at 72 dpi.
We get a warning during assembly, but once the assembly is complete and we create versions within that assembly, we don't reassemble it, and we no longer get any warnings about missing fonts. The only thing to do is to manually check whether the “Resolve missing font issues” option is enabled or not, and not everyone does that.

Convert Text Frame to Shape
Convert text frame to regular shape while preserving geometry and appearance
Please add a command to convert a rectangular text frame into a regular vector shape while preserving its exact dimensions, position, fill, stroke, and stroke weight.
For example:
1 Select a rectangular area-text frame with a stroke.
2 Choose Object > Content > No Content (similar to InDesign), or another appropriate command.
3 Illustrator converts the text frame into a regular rectangular vector path.
4 The exact geometry and appearance remain unchanged.This is particularly useful when working with Illustrator files that contain text frames which need to become graphic frames after the text has been removed.
Adobe InDesign already provides this workflow through Object > Content, allowing the content type of a frame to be changed without recreating the frame.
In Illustrator, the user currently has to recreate the rectangle manually, even though the required geometry already exists in the text frame. This is unnecessary work and can also introduce small dimensional or positioning errors.
The desired result is simply: Text frame > regular vector rectangle, while preserving position, width, height, fill, stroke and stroke weight.
ThnX in advance!

Enable Illustrator to retain the filenames of placed SVGs or EPS files when shift+dragging them to the canvas from Explorer or Finder..
GOAL:
I am in the process of re-coloring an SVG icon set that has 155 separate SVGs, and I want to then re-export all the modified icons with their original filenames. Unfortunately this appears to be impossible because Illustrator just assigns generic "<group>" names to every placed object.
STEPS:
- I place all SVGs I want to recolor into a new document by shift+dragging them from windows explorer to my open document.
- After this action, all placed SVGs just get a generic name like “
<group>”.
See the image attached to this post. Or view the same image here
PROBLEM:
This is a nightmare, because I have to now rename all of the new SVG files back to their original names after exporting my changes.
PROPOSAL:
When shift+dragging external vector artwork (
SVG,EPS, etc) to the canvas to place it in a document, Illustrator should NAME EACH PLACED FILE according to its actual filename on disk.
SIDE NOTE:
If Illustrator named each object that was placed to its original filename, the process of then renaming the artboards themselves to the correct filenames is easy, as there are multiple scripts out there that move objects to artboards and can rename artboards according to the names of the items that are moved.
See this script for one example: https://github.com/creold/illustrator-scripts/blob/master/jsx/FitSelectionToArtboards.jsx
This is just one of many scripts that can handle this.
CONCLUSION:
Please, please implement the ability to place multiple external vector artwork files with the ORIGINAL FILENAME INTACT.
Thank you for any consideration.

More intelligent document setup
When starting a new document, color mode RGB, for some reason, the swatches palette is populated with CMYK swatches, and the Black swatch is not 0,0,0. Please make this more relevant: When RGB is chosen, the user wants Black to be RGB Black.
Also, let the user choose a background color to represent Alpha (just like After Effects does), or two checkerboard colors.2 votes -
Use full height of the monitor
It would be nice to have a setting to let Illustrator use the monitor more efficient. Especially the tool palette could contain more tools visible on most big screens.

Wider Data Fields Such That All Digits and Units Are Visible
I would like data fields to be sufficiently wide that all digits and units are visible. For example, the Transform Window's X, Y, W and H fields, along with all the others. In addition to being able to see all data at a glance, this would make pasting values into the field much easier because prior to pasting you click once or more to select the current data. Being able to see the entire field allows visual confirmation of what you are about to replace. It is not usual to get tripped up by inadvertently including or excluding the units, which are frequently hidden.

Line Cut Tool for Adobe Illustrator
I would like to suggest a new tool for Adobe Illustrator called “Line Cut”.
The concept is very simple: the user draws a straight line across any selected object, and Illustrator cuts the object along that line from one edge to the other.
The tool should work with:
- Vector shapes;
- Compound paths;
- Groups;
- Text converted to outlines;
- Multiple selected objects;
- Placed or embedded raster images.
For example, if I have a rectangle and draw a line through its middle, the tool would immediately divide the rectangle into two independent objects.
The same concept should work with irregular vector shapes: the line would intersect the object and Illustrator would automatically calculate the intersections and create the resulting separate pieces.
For raster images, the tool could divide the image into separate cropped sections while preserving the original resolution.
Ideally, the workflow would be:
- Select one or more objects.
- Activate the Line Cut Tool.
- Draw a straight line across the objects.
- Illustrator automatically calculates the intersections.
- The objects are divided into separate pieces.
Additional options could include:
- Horizontal, vertical, or free-angle cuts;
- Cutting multiple objects at once;
- Holding Shift to constrain the cutting angle;
- Keeping both resulting pieces;
- Option to delete one side immediately;
- Support for repeated cuts.
This would be particularly useful for graphic designers and print-production users who frequently need to divide artwork quickly.
The main advantage would be speed and simplicity: instead of manually using Pathfinder, Shape Builder, clipping masks, or other workarounds, the user could simply draw a line and cut the artwork.
Thank you for considering this feature request.

Illustrator & Adobe Stock Integration
Illustrator & Adobe Stock Integration
Observation | A User may download and insert a comp image from Adobe Stock into their project while awaiting client image approval, however, relinking the file is a long an unnecessarily tedious process.
Behaviour | The User places the comp Adobe Stock image into their project. The client approves the images. The User clicks the ReLink button, copies the comp image ID number from the filename in the top left of the screen, navigates to stock.adobe.com, pastes in the filename ID number and searches for the image. The User then downloads the high resolution image, navigates back to Illustrator and Relinks the placeholder to the new image.
Expected Behaviour | Client approves the placeholder comp image. The User, while in Illustrator, selects the linked image in the Links Panel and presses the Adobe Stock button. Illustrator scans the filename for the ID number and links directly to Adobe Stock. An Adobe Stock window appears in Illustrator and the User is given the opportunity to download the file or to download and automatically insert the Adobe Stock Image as a Relinked file with the file that was selected.
