Right now Illustrator offers Retype function, still in Beta, which allows you to recognize and rebuild a text, if the font is installed on your drive or exist in Adobe Fonts. Have you tried it? It works on word basis, restoring one at a time.
This function was designed to solves tasks like you describe.

Another option you can use, a more honest one, is 'Create outlined text paths to editable text' button command from VectorFirstAid plugin from Astute Graphics. It works by comparing a chosen font with outlines and restoring positions precisely, for the whole selection (but requires unchanged outlines).

If you just need to save the font name when a text is outlined, I think it’s something that can be handled with a script... But it won’t be as different as the habit you already have, and won’t apply to the majority of users who don’t use the script.

Interesting. For now you can do it manually by adding the name of it to the note field in the info panel. And it looks like a thing that a custom script can do. But I doubt that this can be a wide-needed feature .

There is a feature request to have Increment/Decrement Stroke Weight key commands:
    http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/32307397

Is this what you mean? Or do you just mean the Width tool, to apply variable widths to strokes?

    What do you mean specifically?
If it does crash for you when you use Apple Pencil (but does not when you use just fingers) — then it’s a known bug, and the team is working on fixing it: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/931885-illustrator-ipad-bugs/suggestions/47171770-when-using-apple-pencil-it-crashes-on-ipad-os-17

Does it also crash when you use pencil?
Does it work fine when you use touch only?

Oh yes, indeed, it’s even simpler. Thanks for the exploration!

Ah, I see now what you mean. Indeed, Ai treats a click on the ruler as focusing an artboard that is under the ruler.
    Voted.

Ryan, does it still happen for you?
It does not happen for me when I test it in recent versions, the rulers stay true to the currently active artboard.

Do you mean Properties panel or Control bar?
When it happens, are you able to use the other panels/bars to edit values?
Can you record this on video next time it happens, just to demo the exact behavior?

    What version do you use?
Does it happen in Beta? Can you check it? (you can install it from CCD)

    Nah, does not happen :(
What does the History panel gets as a listed item when you copy the artboard with the contents?
It displays only one per operation for me, properly named. Can you please record a video?

Does not happen for me, can’t replicate in — but I am on Windows. Artwork moves back with the artboard it lies within...
Still, can you please try to replicate it with a simple test file. If it behaves the same — please share it here, just in case.

Do you still have this problem happening?
I assume this can be caused by the Large Canvas function enabled for the document, which makes Ai secretly scale the document 10 times...
...but it also can be something else entirely.
If you still have this file (or another one this problem happens with) — can you share it here, please, for the team to look at it?

There are some benefits to this:
    — Expanded results look cleaner
    ...and that’s it.

    Then, there are some detriments:
    — It takes Ai longer to treat the strokes, and when compared, the time difference when modifying the paths is noticeable.
    — Ai makes simplification in a dumb way, treating the object as just a path. It means the pairs of anchor we were able to use before are no longer there. Ai does not keep points where the original markers were placed.
    — This is a hardcoded change, and no option to disable it (neither in UI or Prefs file) is given.
    — This change lead to killing off some established complex appearance workflows. Sorry, but I can’t provide links to prove it — the original tweets about this change were published in Japanese.

Please take a look at the file attached.
When we expand a stroke on the left, we don’t points an tangencies (position 4), and we don’t keep points on the perpendiculars to the original width marker (position 2)...
This is a simple case, and it gets more noticeable with more complex paths.

Which version will have this to test?

It’s very unlikely, to my knowledge, that the team is going to my fundamental changes to variable width algorithm (except maybe for cleaner results, some attempt to improve it you can see in version 26 (2022)).

I’d suggest to have an anticipation for the upcoming Letterlink plugin instead. It looks and feels far more superior.

Jim, what about the dedicated Character panel — does the dropdown list in it behaves the same way as in Properties?

What about the 'keyboard dropping out', what does it mean? The keyboard just stops working at all, or the hotkeys fail, or they just vanish, or what? Please give more details — and perhaps make it a separate report instead of a comment for the different thing. Same for the 'black save screen' — what do you call a 'save screen'? Can you share a screenshot?

I assume the same happens when you try to access fonts from dropdowns in Properties, in Control panel, and from Type > Font menu?

Andrea, which Export method do you use: Export for Screens, or Export As?
Does it help to export PNGs instead?
Does any other app you have access to view these as duplicates, the same way Rush does?
Did you contact the Rush's developers on this? (here: https://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html or community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-rush/ct-p/ct-premiere-rush)

Mike, I asked this even before it got shipped.
Unfortunately, Ai team decided to ignore / postpone implementing that.
Here is the request you can upvote: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/44001624-match-arrow-keys-to-view-rotation

Also, as you already know, Astute Graphics offers a nifty workaround for this with its DirectPrefs panel, which allows to sync the Constrain Angle value to the current view rotation angle. Arrows and selection marquee will still work unaffected, but this if better than nothing.

There is a native workaround to deal with it and a third-party automated solution.

To force Ai to rotate a coordinate system with the view, you have to go to Preferences > General and edit the Constrain Angle value. Put a negative angle in the field — so, if you rotated the view 37°, put minus 37°. When you do that, hitting arrow keys will result moving the artwork in a proper direction, and new shapes created will be drawn properly.

Unfortunately, the marquee you get when drag with selection tools will stay rotated — this is a separate issue.

An automated solution would be using DirectPrefs plugin from Astute Graphics. Open its preferences (in the panel’s menu and enable Show Constrain Lock option. This will add a small button on the panel. Once you press it, the plugin will automatically sync the rotation angle and the constrain angle.

Take a look at the screenshot.
The plugin is free, once you register.

Elenit, yes, true, the team is aware of the disconnection you describe and it is under review.
To make most of tools work unrotated when the view is, you need to change Constrain Angle value to be a negative of you current view angle (e.g. minus 15 for 15). So far manually, but it’s going to be automated. If you can’t wait, you can use a similar option in DirectPrefs plugin form AstuteGraphics’ plugins pack — it matches the values for you in background.

AdminEgor Chistyakov (Admin, Adobe Illustrator) commented  ·

AstuteGraphics plugin pack has a plugin called DirectPrefs, that has Constraint Lock option. Once enabled, it counter-matches the Constrain Angle set in general preferences, giving you the grid that is always orthogonal to a view, which makes arrow keys work orthogonal as well.

Sure it must work from the box.

You can move the view with PageUp/PageDown and modifier keys: Ctrl to scroll horizontally instead of vertically, Alt to use smaller steps instead of large. These require two hands (unless you use the right one) though...

As for the view rotation... I’d propose to use Shift (I think it does nothing now but dings). Will it work for you?

Not sure if arrows keys should be modal for that, but that is my preference.

It can, but it still can’t do it automatically.
See, it is not the canvas that is rotating, but a 'camera' looking at it, a viewport. The axis is still at 0, and arrows work accordingly.

To do what you want, you should copy the angle of the view rotation, open Preferences: General and set the negative of the copied value to the Constrain Angle field. Turn on the grid to see if it 'straight' now.

I am considering this request as 'Allow Ai to counter-sync Constrain Angle with the rotation of the view' :)

Allison, do you mean the section in Properties panel specifically (to hide it), or do you want to completely disable it, even the separate dedicated panel?
