Just to clarify — this happened again after you upgraded from 29.6.1 to 29.7.1, correct?

Do you mean Control panel? Properties panel? Or the Contextual Task Bar panel? or perhaps any panel?

There is an article an a video about installing Beta builds: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/creative-cloud-beta.html
    Can you follow the steps?

David, the build number you show is 29.8.0.43.
The latest Beta build is 29.8.0.68. Please check for an update (sometimes it takes time to get found).

Confirm this on Windows. Changing the brightness of the user interface doesn’t help.

Starting with Beta 29.7.1 the Rearrange dialog got a separate dedicated feature, currently called 'Align Manually'.

With it disabled, artboards get positioned instantly in the center of the canvas, as it behaved previously.

When this is enabled, you will enter the positioning mode after pressing OK — to allow rearranging only some artboards, to address this request.

With more than 1 artboard selected (but not all), the mode gets enabled automatically (and becomes locked).

@J Kaufman, this frame lets us choose a place where the artboards would land on canvas.
Sure, it doesn’t make sense to see this frame when we need to rearrange ALL artboards...
So this has been changed — in Beta for now, to make sure it’s a fine solution.
Now this frame will show up only if you have only SOME artboards selected. When all or just one artboards are selected, this option (now it’s a dedicated option in the Rearrange dialog) becomes unchecked.
Please try the solution and comment back.

Mark, this is a recent addition, based on this request, 'Rearrange only Selected artboards' — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/32653399
However, the fact that users are now forced to position the layout each time (instead of only when necessary), and the lack of respect to snapping, made this entry happen, 'Allow legacy behavior for "Rearrange Artboards"' — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/50053986
I think your report can be safely merged into that one. Would you agree?

@Janendra, 44 users would disagree with you :)
This is a feature requested by the users — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/32653399
The problem is that the choice to position rearranged artboards has become forced on us, in cases where 'just center on canvas' would have sufficed.
Plus it ignores pixel grid snapping in cases it matters...

Audri, I agree, but I’d like to know more.
What if this worked only when some artboards were selected (this is the reason why this step was added, to allow partial rearrangement), and skipped when none (or one) were selected? Would this work for you?

    I see what’s happening exactly.
There is the Type > Insert WhiteSpace Character > Em Space command, and it uses Cmd+Shift+M.
And if you enable Show Hidden Characters, you’ll see that it’s what is inserted when you press Cmd+OPT+Shift+M (visible as a long dash symbol).
For some reason OPT is ignored when we are in the text editing mode, and Em Space get typed in.

Luckily, there’s a simple workaround you can use now — use Cmd+Shift+F instead. It’s the same command, but a primary hotkey. You can check it in Keyboards Shortcuts > Menu Commands > Other Text.

However, it IS a bug, and thanks for reporting it!

I assume you have 'Anchor Points in Selection Tool and Shape Tool' option enabled in Preferences > Selection & Anchor Display, to see anchors when using bounding box with Selection tool?
Even with this on, I can’t make it happen, anchors don’t drift away...
Please remind me of your OS and hardware specs.

A similar problem with Live Paint:
    http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/37424191
Live Paint uses secret internal rounding to a pixel grid, and this leads to loosing precision.

Ruy, actually, this is intended. Live Paint and Shape Builder both make tiniest simplifications to the art, for the sake of the speed. If you watch the original paper about Live Paint — https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/1275808.1276415 — you’ll hear Paul voicing this out.

More of it, you can make a simple test to see Live Paint breaking the precision. Create a new document and choose millimeters as units (this is important). Create a simple rectangle that has integer dimensions and is placed perfectly on integer coordinates. Convert it to Live Paint object. Expand it. Check coordinates and dimensions.
This bug is less prominent for pixels and inches -based documents, because LivePaint rounds values to fractions of a point.

But I vote because this drives me crazy. I believe that the algorithm can keep values and not ditch my data. Thank you for reporting it.

I agree. Main reason I almost never use Live Paint except for rather freeform stuff.

Can you still reproduce this problem today?
Nothing crashes for me when I try...
If it does for you, please record a small video about this, to show what are your steps exactly (because these can be made with various methods).

    Hi David,

This happens, when you open some menu while a panel pop-up is still open. Since you had the fill popup open from properties panel, when you clicked on menu, so its grayed out.
You need to close the popup first to open the menu.

AdminEgor Chistyakov (Admin, Adobe Illustrator) commented  ·

David, when I try this today, it doesn’t crash anything, so the issues is resolved — if it doesn’t crash for you as well, please check.

However, any click outside of the opened popup panel closes it first and doesn’t click anything it hit, including top menu. So the top menu just doesn’t unfurl.
This is a common behavior for all non-OS popup menus, and I hate it.

    So this happens for:
    — Properties popups and dropdowns
    — Control popups dropdowns (Global Edit Options, Color UI, etc.)

    This doesn’t happen for:
    — Panels’ flyout menus (hamburger icon)
    — Dropdown bottom buttons in other panels (like 'fx' in Appearance, Libraries in Swatches and Brushes panels, etc.) — these are handled by OS.

Why Ai decided it should break the current OS standards (I speak about Windows ones) — a mystery.

I wonder if this problem still happens with the recent version of Ai?
When I try to do it now, it just works. Perhaps it happens in a specific document only? Can you reproduce it from scratch?

    True, freezes and then crashes.
This easily can happen accidentally, when using arrow keys in the input.
