An error occurred while saving the comment I am not sure about the workflow you are describing.
'Painting using a gaussian blur'? Can you provide some screenshots of this? I have a suspicion you mean Photoshop and not Illustrator. -

Ai allows to use Halftone effects via Effect -> Pixelate -> Color halftone.
What specific cases are not solvable through the use of this?

An error occurred while saving the comment Another way to achieve the same effect would be to use a third-party plugin, Astute Graphics’ AG Offset. It allows to apply an offset to the fills and strokes altogether: https://twitter.com/astutegraphics/status/1574310297950617602?s=20&t=o0LQOHGQV-OMkHT9Orz3og
An error occurred while saving the comment Stéphanie, Outline effects can be tricky to grasp, but once you understand them, you get a very powerful tools. Try to experiment more and study how users like https://twitter.com/coro46 and https://twitter.com/Vektorgarten use the Appearance panel.
Check the file attached, it uses one of the methods you can use to make a live offset for a live stroke with a live arrowhead.

An error occurred while saving the comment A third-party commercial plugin Phantasm allows exactly this.
Sure something similar from the box would be helpful to have.

An error occurred while saving the comment As for the Attach Symbol, I'd like to try this one.
An error occurred while saving the comment Liquid Layout is a good steal.
But it turns AI into InD. Why not work in InD instead? -

An error occurred while saving the comment Kurt, the file has a lot of shadows applied to various objects, and I am able to add new shadows, replace old ones, edit them, etc. The file does not crash for me on save, with or without PDF-compatibility.
Can you specify steps you are making with these, or maybe record a video?
What should Ai do with the dialog open if you accidentally deselect the object? Or add something into selection? Please elaborate on your vision of this.
