Ai iPad users who had the contextual bar form the beginning, has the same problem with obstructing the art as the desktop now has:
    http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/931885/suggestions/41795752
The only difference is that they can’t reposition the bar!

K-O, I agree, I think the font weight and style is better to be chosen in a different manner altogether, without duplicating the dropdown ONE MORE TIME — we already have at least four places we can do that. I was thinking about B and I buttons, and to let Ai smartly pick and cycle through the possible styles...

However — can you please provide screenshots of the situation with the dropdown positions on screen, to clarify the problem to everybody?

I think Flip operations should be visible for any selection, not just images. And I think we should be able to decide, which options we would like to see in the panel. And I think Ai should allow us to use ANY function it has there, even those existing in panels’ flyout menus (which today we can’t even automate with hotkeys!). Remember — a professional tool is a customizable tool.

The bar does not follow the selection, when the bounding box is turned off. Bounding box should not influence the positioning of the bar. The connection makes little sense.

Nick, I somewhat share the feeling towards it. And luckily we can disable it for now — with Window > Contextual Task Bar option.
However — what do you think the team can change to make it a) less atrocious, b) really useful?

Sami, which Adobe app has this? InDesign does not, Photoshop does not (it has the most rudimentary swatch dialog ever)...

The Eyedropper is definitely needed, in this dialog, or the Color Picker dialog (there is a separate request for this: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/20490016)

As a workaround, I can offer this routine:
    1. Sample a color you need outside of dialogs
    2. Create a new global swatch with the color you want
    3. Deselect your objects if you had them selected
    4. In Swatches, select the new swatch, then hold Cmd/Ctrl and add the old swatch to the chip selection
    5. From the Swatches panel’s flyout menu pick Merge Swatches.
This should merge both global swatches into one, replacing the color in all the objects that used the old global color.
Yeah, I know, a very clunky way... but at least it works.

Graham, it feels like a problem of the sharing app you use, not Illustrator — Ai most probably does not know anything of the screen sharing process and hardly can influence it. But that's' my guess.
What is the app you are using to share the screen?
Does it matter what kind or size of the image you are moving?
    What about other operations?
Does it take long for the screen sharing to crash?
Have you reported the problem to the developer of the app also?

Nathan, it feels like you have Paste Remembers Layers enabled (the one you can toggle in Layers panel’s flyout menu). Do you have turned it on intentionally?
However, the change you are proposing makes sense and was asked before. I am merging the requests.

An option to choose a layer to drag into, lock/inlock a current one, seems like a more approachable idea than holding a hotkey... But I won’t mind in having both ways.

Helen, it seems like something with Sonoma does not work properly with Illustrator... or vise versa. There is another bug that seems related to this problem, reported here: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/47400233

Can you please check if it behaves the same for you?

Preview checkboxes in Illustrator work as Apply buttons, and unchecking it in this panel won’t force the image to fall back to the original untraced image.
Same behavior is true for effects, for example.
    Make a simple test:
    1. Draw a rectangle, give it some fill or stroke
    2. Apply Offset Path effect to it
    3. Type a value, make sure Preview is ticked
    4. Now untick the Preview and notice Ai won’t remove the already drawn offset. What it does is just stop immediately applying the value. This is what Preview checkboxes do.

However, I understand the problem. That’s why the panel has an 'eye' button next to View dropdown. If you click and hold it, Ai reverts the traced image to the original source image, so you can compare.

Amazing demo by Von Glitschka: https://youtu.be/YHsHF-oGwt0?t=809
If you call a panel through the Window menu with an image selected, the panel is inactive and forces you to reselect the image.

Thomas, the thing you talk about is a known problem the team is fixing:
    http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/47400233

The problem TomB reported is a different one.

Stones, do you have any clipboard managers installed and active? PowerToys maybe? CopyQ, Ditto?
What options are enabled for you in Preferences > Clipboard Handling?
Does it differ if you use menu commands to copy rather than hotkeys?
