Illustrator today allows to set this mode as a default behavior with the Select Objects only within Marquee option, in Preferences > Selection & Anchor Display.
An error occurred while saving the comment Original request is "This should be a selectable selection mode (also with a hotkey), and in fact there should be a way to set it as the default option."
Does the new selection mode have a hotkey?
When needed, to change selection behaviour from preferences is not practical. -

An error occurred while saving the comment Pen tool feels very unnatural in its current form. I use the Pencil tool to draw, and third-party tools (Astute) to shape the path and handle the final touches.
