I just updated this morning to 27.0. The problem persists. I suspect thousands of people are dealing with this every day, and like me for so long, don't even realize it's happening. This needs some attention!

Yes. I've made a new thread for this; I've been having this issue for months, but couldn't pinpoint why. I've probably had this issue for much longer and simply didn't notice before, based on how long ago you posted this. Same happens in CMYK. This issue does not happen when placing the same way into Photoshop.

I didn't see your thread before I started mine: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/45727408-screenshot-preview-placement-in-illustrator-mac-o

Hi Colm, if you're still having this problem, can I ask you .... do you happen to be taking screenshots, and placing them in your document? If so, are you grabbing the little "preview" screenshot that pops up in the bottom corner of your screen? If so, after months of trouble with this, I narrowed it down to this problem for myself. (I didn't see your post and made a new one here https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/45727408-screenshot-preview-placement-in-illustrator-mac-o ) I'm hoping somebody there will become aware of this, because I've tested it with other co-workers, it's easily replicable.

If you place the screenthots NOT using the preview (ie, dragging from the finder, or File > place), the problem does not arise for me.

When taking a screenshot on a Mac (Big Sur, 11.7) a small preview of the screenshot appears in the bottom right corner of the screen. If you grab that preview before it disappears, you can place it in an email, chat app, or any other software that will accept it, including Illustrator and Photoshop. It's a nice little time-saver. However, when I grab that preview and place it in Illustrator, the document becomes either "Untagged CMYK" or "Display" (RGB) on its own. I didn't notice this for a very long time, but was constantly having color problems, only to find out my color mode had been changed without my knowledge to "Display" or "Untagged CMYK". Now I know what's causing it at least! I can work around this of course, but since probably many others are having this problem and don't even know it, I thought I'd pass this on.

Once the color profile is changed to "display" or "untagged CMYK" in this manner, no amount of "Command+Z" will bring back the colors you had OR change the color profile back to the original.

One note: if the screenshot preview is left alone, it disappears and then is saved on the hard drive as a PNG; whereas, if left so save to the hard drive, it is saved as a PNG. If the screenshot is placed conventionally (either dragging from the finder into a document, or via File > Place, this color space change doesn't seem to be an issue. It is ONLY when grabbing the preview to place the screenshot as far as I can tell.

@andikm I had this problem for a long time and it didn’t go away until I upgraded to Catalina. (Not sure which OS or which platform you’re using). Another bit of advice someone gave me that worked for me prior to the OS upgrade was to uncheck “Application Frame” and then recheck it, if I recall. (Window > Application Frame). Before discovering that, I usually had to restart the software. Hope that helps.

Update: I was on with Adobe support for weeks, and even was communicating with some pretty high-level tech support by the end. Eventually, if I recall, we simply pulled off ALL Adobe products and did a full wipe of everything Adobe. Apparently a simple uninstall / reinstall is not at all the same thing (?). Although I lost some preferences (despite trying to keep as many as possible), the high RAM usage for AiRobin seemed to go away after the fresh install. I still have weird problems that persist, but at least that one has been mitigated finally.

Tyler: this is the first helpful info I've heard on this topic. Any other solution required restarting Illustrator (same for Photoshop). You're right, that does work. Sure, it's not a fix, but in the meantime, I'll take it.

To clarify: moving the entire application frame even just a hair to the right or left, then putting it back in place, does the trick WITHOUT a restart of the software.

I have noticed slower save times over the past year or so than ever before. Save times are similar now to larger Photoshop files. Strange. Even smaller files that were once instantaneous now take several seconds, which seems odd. But my biggest gripe is this AiRobin thing that seems to be hogging so much RAM (15 GB on my machine, even when Illustrator is first opened and is doing nothing; Illustrator itself in this state only uses 1 GB). I have unchecked the boxes allowing for background save / export, yet AiRobin continues to run and uses the same amount of RAM as before. What in the world is AiRobin doing? Considering Illustrator has no files open, AND I have disabled background save / export? Whatever it's doing, I can't see that it's helping me in any way. So, unless it is helping in some way I'm unaware of .... can you let me know what it is doing? Or, can we please eliminate it?

As a very long-time user (and 5-day-a-week user) I will say I would MUCH prefer a more flawless version of the product over new features I rarely if ever use. Please.

Rick — it isn't just linear gradients either. I have had it happen to radial gradients within the same file I was working yesterday. I have tried to reproduce the issue in a more controlled way (ie, trying to reproduce all the factors I could think of) but couldn't get it to happen. There's for sure a bug, but I'm not sure how to pass on more complete info to the engineers yet so they can see it on their end.

Thanks for the install info; I am always hesitant to install previous versions (probably just idiosyncratic) but I might in this case.

I have been having the same problem. I am tempted to go back to the previous version too, but won't because I simply don't have the time to go through the process. But if it helps the Adobe engineers (if they ever see this post!) I am working on a document with a sizable number of gradients (20 to 30). I wish I could find any other common denominators here. But it seems like Illustrator is only grabbing other objects that have the EXACT same gradient fill (like as if I was to do "Select > Same Fill Color") and edits those specific ones. (Even though those other shapes with gradient fills are not selected).
