Dear users,
You can now see a new 'save selection' button on the layers panel which enables to select multiple objects and save it for later use. Please try it out in BETA and let us know your feedback.

Latest Beta Build 29.1.0.79 introduces a new default keyboard shortcut for the Ungroup All command, Opt/Alt + Shift + G. You will be able to use it, if you use 'Illustrator Defaults' set. If you have a custom set, it won’t be forced into it, but you can always assign it yourself.
Plus, the position of this new command is now below Ungroup.

There is a separate request to rename the comment or add another, to distinct two operations: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/43634643-delete-hidden-layers-command-innapropriately-nam Please vote. Also, there is another request to delete unused/empty layers: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/40696027-delete-unused-layersJD supported this idea ·

In latest versions you can enable 'Select and Unlock objects on canvas ' option in Preferences > Selection & Anchor Display section. This will draw a small lock marker for those objects that are locked in your selection (they won’t be a part of selection box though) — click it to unlock an object. Please try it and comment back about if it works for you.
Another way to do it is to right-click on the locked object (with or without the option above being enabled) choose Unlock and pick an object to unlock from the list. If you want Ai to highlight these on canvas when browsing this menu, you can upvote this request.

An indented way to achieve this now is to create a simple action.
1. Create an action
2. Select some art
3. Create a new Layer with a button in the Layers panel
4. Object > Arrange > Send to Current Layer
5. End recording
Actions are great for automating various routines we have in Illustrator, and this is just one of them. If you think it still should be a native operation instead (or an action to be included in standard Actions pack) — please vote and comment.

Hi Egor,
In response to "Speaking of layers — well InDesign has a very similar Layers model, modelled after Ai (no pun intended). But you think they are different enough to be better in InD. Can you elaborate on that please?"
For example - AI separates each letter of one word onto a separate layer, this can't be necessary for many designers, it's certainly not in my world. In InDesign I can decide what goes on each layer - the program does not make that decision for me. I don't need 50 layers or more to deal with. Maybe I don't know how to simplify them?
