Resizing multiple Artboards at once for a better Icon-design performance
When creating an icon-set of hundreds of icons at 16px, it would be super convenient to have the option to resize all the artboards for the following sizes (e.g: 24 px, 32px, 48px...). This is so cause when I have created the first file, I have also taken the time to properly name all the artboards so that when I export them, developers can find them with the naming-system that we had already created.
The problem I am facing now with this feature is that I cannot keep the names and so, I need to start over the same process…

Make option for new artboards to track their names based on existing artboards
Create 2 artboards.
Delete second one.
Create new artboard—the name will be 'Artboard 3'.This is very-very inconvenient most of the times.
Make it behave as Layers behave both in PS and AI!
New artboard should check the stack and increment it's name properly.35 votes -
Way to change "Custom" Document name
Would love to be able to change this "Custom" name to something more descriptive. I have a few piece of equipment that I would like to be able to select quickly. For now I have to go through the hassle of templates which works well but is several other clicks. Would be nice to have a way to quickly create documents for those specific equipment types with preconfigured settings.

Document setup with two or more measurement units
I often work in both imperial and metric on documents, such as having a box be seven inches, but the minuscule die line details cut up in millimeters. So, it would be great if the Transform pallet displayed both, rather than one or the other.

Automatically push guides to a single layer
It'd be great to have an optional feature that pushes every newly created guide to a dedicated guide layer. I think many people work with an extra layer for guides on top of their layer stack to toggle visibility and lock, and manually collecting all guides gets tedious.

Move Hidden Layers with Parent
I can't Move Hidden layers, groups, and objects if they are part of a group. Even if I click the targe icon, nothing hidden selects.
Sincerest apologies to those familiar with the workflow in Illustrator but coming from photoshop it is mind-boggling that a Parent object does not move its children along with it just because they are invisible.
Photoshop handles this exactly as one would expect and moves hidden items. Just because I can't see it doesn't also mean that it behaves as if locked.Context: when building a character for Character Animator a very complex grouping structure exists…

Make an option to disable auto-selection of artboards, when clicked inside
AI now selects artboard whenever mouse is clicked within in (with any tool). While it's a great general behaviour, I'd like to be able to disable it.
I have to work with overlapping artboards (which, by the way, sometimes prevent AI from correctly selecting the artboard clicked—it depends on artboards' order). When object is copied, AI remembers it's coordinates. Then, when I go to the object I need to place my copied art over and press Ctrl+F, AI pastes the object in the same coordinates. Sounds OK, but when I clicked that underlying object, AI moved the focus from initial…

Set application default Type and Paragraph menu options
I have Middle East/English installed b/c occasionally I need to do a ME translation and it is pointless to have to uninstall/reinstall each time. I would like the ability to set the application default for the following so that when you set up a new document, it defaults to the things you wanted. You can currently do this with tools, but not with the actual menus.
Type Menu:
Font
Lanugage
DigitsParagraph Menu:
Alignment
Paragraph Direction
Composer type (e.g. Adobe Single Line composer)
Type directionYou can do this in InDesign but not in Illustrator. Not sure why, but it's…

Insert a new artboard in a specific order position
I usually work with a lot of artboards around 100 per file.
I would like the possibility to enter the number of the position of the artboard! The problem consist when I have a lot or artboards and I create a new one it is the last in artboard panel. Then I need to drag it up to the preferred order position. If it needs to be in the third place I need a lot of scrolling up!

Possibility for the USER to set the default units when creating a new document
It saves time. In stead of having to adjust this for every new document, it would be a lot better to let users define their own standards, templates and what so ever…

This option already exists in Illustrator, in Preferences > General, although the name of it is quite obscure — Show/Hide Rulers. Once it’s enabled, each new or opened document will have rulers enabled.

Option for Artboards to be non-printing
Would be very useful if there could be a setting in the Artboards palate that could make them 'non-printing' (Like in Layers) - I use a lot of pre-prepared template files and sometimes don't use all Artboards, so to 'turn them off' rather than having to delete (as I may need them later in a job) or keep changing print options would be great.

a way to nest objects on art board for sign makers
Idea: Take multiple objects, such as multiple copies of a logo or elements and nesting them within the artboard and a feature to say how much space you want between each object.
Reason: When it comes to signs or sending a print job to a plotter. Sign makers want to maximize the number of objects on a vinyl. Sure we can manually move objects or even use the distribute tool. but this takes to long and sometimes when selecting multiple objects you can not use the distribution tool to distribute both vertical and horizontal at the same time or objects…

Keyboard shortcut to fit artboard to selection
Currently you must have content selected to fit it to art board in focus. This workflow adds extra interaction cost by having to remember to first select before hitting the drop-down menu to fit it. Selecting the content and art board and striking a key command would make this a lot more efficient.
22 votesIllustrator has two commands to fit artboards.
One of them, 'Fit to Selected Art', requires a selection — obviously.
The other one, 'Fit to Artwork Bounds' — does not, but works for the entire artwork.
You can insert the one that you need in an action, using the 'Insert menu item...' command from the Actions panel’s flyout menu, and assign a hotkey to the action.
However, I believe the request is not about a hotkey, but a way to let Illustrator to 'Fit to the contents of artboard' command? Please comment back to make it clear.

How to open multi-page pdf in Illustrator on their newly-created artboards
Hello,
I have to place multi-page pdf's on a daily basis at work. The File, Open command let's me choose a pdf file and select which pages to open in Illustrator. It even has the option of opening them as links. This is great! Now, would it be possible to have Illustrator create artboards and populate them with pages from the pdf file? Perhaps through a dialog box? Thank you for your time!5 votes -
Allow large format canvas for outdoors/billboards design without scaling
Using Illustrator (or InDesign, for that matter) to make outdoors/large printing projects is a huge pain - many times the production team (which is usually NOT the same team that designed the thing) doesn't read properly the instructions, and then errors happen.
Also, other older software packages don't suffer from that kind of artwork / artboard size limitations.
