Option to show rulers by default
I would like an option to set the rulers to show by default. I know it's only one shortcut away, but I have to do it about a million times a day. (OK, maybe only 500K)
Hi Everyone,
This has been completed, and has available since June 2020 release (version 24.2)
Please go to Illustrator preferences > General > and select “Show/Hide Rulers” (refer attached screenshot). After checking this, if you hit ‘Show Rulers (Ctrl/Cmd + R)’, then the rulers will appear in every document (new and old), even after relaunching Illustrator.
Please update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html
Thank you for all the feedback.

I use rulers on everything. PLEASE make "show rulers by default" a preferences option.

I use rulers on nearly every project I work on. I am so fed up with hitting CTRL-R every time I open a file, just to turn on this fundamental drawing aid.

Please make 'show ruler' a default setting. Also, it would be helpful if I did not have to change to mm/ppt every single time. How come it is not a default option?

It's so frustrating that we have to turn on the rulers with every new Illustrator project, when there is never a situation where it's preferable to have them off. Please vote this to the top of page one to make the continued ignoring of this feature impossible.

I also want this feature.
I would like it so that all my settings on close are there when I start Illustrator up again.
Thanks. -

I can't believe this is still a problem. Who's at the helm as we pay a fortune for Adobe each year?

Ruler on by default is what everyone wants, please!!! This is so annoying. Everytime I open a client file, my ruler is gone. This should be a global setting...

They seem to be too busy shoving Cloud and Library integration down our throats to be bothered with the practical things we actually use on a daily basis. I really don't understand what goes through the development teams' heads - they give us a shiny new (extremely slow, barely responsive) 2019 suite where you can customise tools and tool palettes and manage elements in a Properties panel, but the simple stuff like being able to set Rulers and Preview buttons for Scale & Rotate to default 'on' don't seem to feature in their improvement plans.
I wonder if they any of them actually use the tools that they build or have professional users testing for them?
It's interesting seeing the difference in response from Quark to the members on their official QuarkXpress Facebook page - they changed the functionality of some of the Type tools in the measurements panel in the first release of 2018 and people weren't happy with what they'd changed. Guess what? They reverted the entire panel functionality back to how it was previously and released an update, all within 4 weeks. That's customer service for you.

I agree - I have already posted - and would love to know if any developer actually reads these posts. I am also finding that the unit preferences are a bit wonky as well. They don't always default to what you have set when opening a new document.
These kind of preference settings always used to be part of illustrator - and they just seem get lost with all the complexity and extra new features. It's great to have new features - but not at the expense of losing logical old ones. Preferences are important to be able to set the app the way you usually use it. Illustrator needs to review some of the basic preference features again - the ones we all use over and over again. And some things like rulers, units, and nudging (as a few examples), are just plain logical. We pay quite a bit for this program every year - and they still can't get it right! This particular thread has been going on for a long time and is still active. When will we see this!
Illustrator - PLEASE READ and get back to some basics as well!

HEY ADOBE. APPARENTLY THE UX DESIGNERS ARE UNABLE TO READ A NORMAL CASE MESSAGE. THIS IS 2019. HOW ABOUT A CHECK BOX IN PREFERENCES TO TURN RULERS ON BY DEFAULT. I'M SURE THIS IS PROBABLY THE MOST COMPLEX FEATURE TO EVER BE ADDED TO ILLUSTRATOR (AND PHOTOSHOP), BUT I'M SURE THAT IF YOU CAN MAKE TRACING A FEATURE, OPACITY A FEATURE, THE LIBRARY A FEATURE, SOMEONE COULD FIGURE OUT HOW TO ADD THE RULERS ON BY DEFAULT. YES, I'M YELLING. I'M SICK OF STUPID INEFFICIENCIES REMAINING IN THE APP WHILE ULTRA COMPLEX STUFF I NEVER USE KEEPS GETTING ADDED. C'MON ALREADY. THIS FEATURE HAS BEEN IN COREL DRAW SINCE VERSION 1.0. AND THAT WAS BACK IN THE 1980S.

I saw this...but have no clue where to change for CS4
Yes this can finally be done in AI CS 4.You launch Illustrator
and file open
and go to Users/username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Illustrator CS4/New Document Profiles
and choose the one or ones you want to have this behavior to apply to
and hit Command R or View Show Rulers and then save the document (if you do a save as make certain you save it to the same location and overwrite the existing one.
Now the profile you have chosen will open with the rulers keep in mind Print is the default so you want to definitely do it to that one.
I also chose View>New View and saved the view and made certain it was selected before I saved it I do not know if you have to do this I think saving the document with the rulers showing is enough.

Lately i seem to be seeing/writing way to many comments about Illustrator bugs or features. Please change this by default. So annoying and an easy fix.

I don't get why this option is not given... it's not difficult to do and most of us need it every day. Please, listen to us!!

I agree, this should be part of you personal preferences for document setup, if you are creating new documents frequently then turning something so basic on every time feels like you're having to set the doc up and it's a waste of energy. Just make it a prefernce tickbox that can be saved easily. It can't be that hard.

I totally agree - I searched for an answer because I thought there might be a way I was not aware of - but no, instead there are forums for a wish list. I agree, I am not sure Adobe listens to these simple requests.
ADOBE - could you PLEASE LISTEN UP here!!! Have a show ruler preference!!!!! This is ridiculous
