That’s exactly why I think this should be an optional preference, not the default behavior.

I completely understand why forcing Key Object mode on every Illustrator user caused problems. Existing workflows shouldn’t be disrupted.

My suggestion is simply to add a preference such as:

“Automatically use the last selected object as the Key Object.”

Users who prefer the current Illustrator workflow can leave it disabled, while users coming from CorelDRAW—or anyone who frequently aligns objects to a reference object—can enable it and save thousands of unnecessary clicks over time.

Regarding the thick key-object outline, I personally wouldn’t find it distracting because it provides useful feedback about which object is acting as the reference. In fact, it would make the automatic behavior even clearer. If needed, its appearance could also be made more subtle.

The goal isn’t to change Illustrator’s workflow for everyone, but to offer an alternative workflow that many professional users would find significantly faster.

One small interaction in Illustrator slows down one of the most frequently used workflows: object alignment.

Today, after selecting multiple objects, users must click one of them again to define it as the Key Object before using Align commands. While this extra click seems minor, it is repeated hundreds of times every day by designers who constantly align objects.

In practice, the last selected object is almost always the object users intend to align to. It already represents the user’s final selection intent, so requiring an additional click interrupts the flow for no real benefit.

CorelDRAW has used this behavior for many years, where the last selected object automatically becomes the alignment reference. For designers who switch between CorelDRAW and Illustrator, this makes alignment noticeably faster and more intuitive in CorelDRAW.

The new customizable keyboard shortcuts for Align commands in Illustrator are an excellent improvement. However, their full productivity potential is limited because users still need the extra click to define the Key Object.

    Suggestion:
Make the last selected object automatically become the Key Object after a multi-selection. This could even be an optional Preference for users who prefer the current behavior.

    This would:

    * Remove an unnecessary click from one of Illustrator’s most common workflows.
    * Better match users’ natural selection intent.
    * Make keyboard-driven alignment significantly faster.
    * Improve productivity for professional users without changing the Align tools themselves.

Small UX improvements like this have a huge cumulative impact because alignment is performed countless times throughout the day.

Since I couldn’t attach the files to the original email, I had to add them here.

    Thank you Egor,

I sent the mail with attachment.

I can not test it on last build of AI

Color mode is CMYK and I get crash working with GPU rendering and smooth zoom activated.

Starting with version 29.3, Illustrator got the 'Embed permitted fonts for file preview' option in the Illustrator Options save dialog.

Currently it’s disabled by default, because there were multiple confused complaints on the changed behavior.

When missing in your current system, fonts will render as previews in the documents that were saved with this option enabled — it 'bakes' these outlines in. When we try to edit one though, we get a warning and the font becomes substituted, as before.

For more details and help, please see this article: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/using/find-missing-fonts.html

However, this is not 'Convert text to outlines on open' as we requested it. The option does not provide a way to do that for all the embedded outline previews, and Ai still doesn’t allow to select these at once. So do please upvote the request and comment and tell the team about your experience with this option, for it…

Just a general status update. We are currently and will continuously improve SVG import support in Adobe Illustrator. We are currently working on solving the issues mentioned in this report. Please feel free to open new bug reports here on uservoice if you are experiencing additional/untracked issues.

The day has come. The latest 30.5.0.102 Beta adds Align To and Distribute Spacing commands into the Object menu.

These also work in actions, can get hotkeys assigned.

A shy message gets displayed when Align To mode is toggled to be sure it’s switched, and the Distribute Spacing dialog allows the set the gap value with the Preview option.

This is a lot, and it now completes the original request.

Please try, test, comment back, have joy!

    Adobe Illustrator's Multithreading Journey Begins!

    Dear Illustrator Community,

I'm thrilled to announce that we've embarked on an exciting journey to bring multithreading capabilities to Adobe Illustrator. This significant undertaking will enhance performance and responsiveness across various aspects of the application.

While this is a complex process that will take some time to fully implement, I wanted to share our progress so far.

    Our Approach

We've strategically begun by focusing on the most computationally intensive operations—those that typically take more time and block the main thread, resulting in slower response times while you work. By moving these operations to separate threads, we aim to significantly improve your overall experience with Illustrator.

It's important to note that you may see more noticeable impact in some areas than others initially. However, we want to assure you that this is just the beginning, and we will continue this journey to bring improvements across…

This is finally available in Beta 30.6.0.75

When you replace a linked image in Illustrator, you can now choose to apply that change everywhere the image appears in your file (even across multiple artboards and repeated layouts).

    How in works:

    1. Select one or more links in the Links panel and click Relink
    2. In the file picker, note the 'Replace:' dropdown below the options
    3. Choose 'All Links (N)' to replace every instance of that file in the document
    4. Choose 'Selected Links (N)' to replace only the instances you selected
    5. Pick the replacement file and click Place

Try it and leave a comment if it works and it works like you need it to.

Also, please don’t forget to upvote this request if you are interested — Display copies of links' duplicates as instances, like in InDesign

    Hi Egor,

When AI display proxy images the perofmans is NOT ok. Proxy images are very low resolution. So AI should faster for rendering these images. But issue is opposite. I think there are wrong codes in depth.

I will check new beta. Thanks for info.

If to control display image settings will fix rendering performance issues then it can be acceptable.
