I am happy to share that we have fixed this bug in our latest release – 30.4 which is available worldwide now.

Edit: This bug has either persisted through versions or resurfaced in the ~30.8 version of Illustrator. I, as are others, are being affected by it. See the comments in this forum post. Resetting preferences IS NOT a worthwhile fix nor an acceptable workaround.
Furthermore, I highly suspect that these two topics are connected in some way

Working with images in Illustrator is far more difficult than it needs to be without this feature. Would love to see it implemented before its 10 year birthday in a few months. 😅 This feature has been in InDesign for a while.
Side note: could this request get moved to "Images, Links" for better categorizing/visibility? Its currently under "Other"

All - we have reverted this change in our latest release - v30.8.2. Please update to latest version.

I'm all for this to be reverted as well as more control over the control panel; there are countless ways to minimally edit within Illustrator or move to Firefly, but no direct button to open an embedded image in Photoshop?

Haha sure, you can convert it to a question as it's "resolved".
I think had the helpx page explain the process of the Color Guide tool better, I may not have assumed this is a bug. It seems that a lot of Adobe Help pages are more conservative in their information.

After going back to recreate this again and look at the problem in a few ways I do think you are right that this is intended behavior, albeit a little janky.
I think having a way to refresh your harmony panel when selecting an object without using Recolor Artwork would make a lot of sense. If you can imagine not knowing that workflow, that is why I thought it was a bug.
I will point out the color book bug reported on 30.7 is also present in the color guide: if referencing a swatch book in the color guide, all shades will be turned to 50% gray

Also experiencing this on MacOS, Tahoe 26.5.1, Illustrator 30.7
Only Color Books and custom swatches added are affected. Behavior is as OP described. After selecting any color book (I tested all), the new color will be 50% black for all current colors.
Interestingly, these are the only .acb or .acbl swatches installed, all other swatches are .ase and currently function as normal. This might be related to the issue.

Another unnecessary addition pushing useless AI features to people that don't want them.. This feature exists in Photoshop already. Why do you need to add it to Illustrator? I would rather expand an image in photoshop and switch to Illustrator while PS works in the background. Now If i want the "convenience" of expanding an image in Illustrator, I get to interrupt my entire workflow and wait for it to finish. Genius.

I didn't even know this was a thing MacOS was missing. Please add this. I spent hours a few weeks ago searching through folders of hundreds unsorted photos to replace hundreds of missing links.
