Font Height Options - "Cap Height" option by default
The new font height option is great!
However, working in the sign trade, everyone including our clients (who are mostly Architects) specify text by cap height so we are constantly changing the default Em size to cap height.
It would save a lot of time and also eliminate any potential size issues with someone having the wrong option selected which could be very costly.

Copy the 'Indent to here' command from InDesign
'As it says on the tin'
So many times you start out creating a graphic and you're in two minds whether to use Illustrator for it's superior vector tools, or InDesign for its superior type control.
When I need to quickly add a couple of bullets it would be so much easier if I could fake the tab stop of the first line with an em dash and then an 'Indent to here' (Ctrl+) so that any wrapped text is quickly brought into line.

I'd like to see the transform values of text be accurate to the text rather than the text box
I'd like to see the transform values of text be accurate to the text rather than the text box. Also so that when I am center aligning text horizontally it will align the actual text and not the text box.
8 votesLatest versions of Illustrator have an exact solution for that.
Open Align panel, and enable Align to Glyph Bounds option in the panel’s menu, for point or area text or both.
The bounding box will remain the same, but the text will now align to and by its actual bounds, just like you want.
Please comment back if it works for you.

Paste from Powerpoint
I used to paste graphics/text from Powerpoint into Illustrator with no issues. Now with CC, only text in Times will paste without corruption into symbols. Is there a way around converting the font before copying?

Search for Paragraph Return, ^p
Find and Replace text has a shortcut popup for a Forced Line Break, ^n, but not the more common simple Paragraph return, ^p.
A Paragraph return is the normal Return button on all keyboards. A forced line break is Shift/Enter.
Find/Replace understands ^n notation for a forced line break, but does not understand ^p notation for a paragraph return.

Merge text broken up when imported from a PDF
I often have to import PDFs into Illustrator always have words and sentences that are no longer part of the same segment. Example. I just imported 24-inch. Each letter, number, and symbol came in individually. Instead of retyping it so I can make edits, it would be nice if there was an option that merged the text back into one line. Screenshot will show what I mean.

Allow users to change the default Area Type Options
I prefer to have 'x Height' as a First Baseline, instead of current default 'Ascent'.
I assume other users would like to change something else, like having 'Auto Size' always enabled from the beginning, or have a different vertical alignment (when will you rename it from the wrong 'Horizontal' to the correct 'Vertical'?! — vote here: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/45711817)
I tried different ways to make these parameters hold — updating Paragraph styles, changing document profiles... it always defaults to these.

Area Type "Inset Spacing" option to set different values for top, bottom, left and right

I would like to set different values for the top, bottom, left and right in the "Inset Spacing" option of Area Type.
It's possible in InDesign; it would be more convenient if it could be in Illustrator.
Additionally, Japanese users often use Area Type to create tables. Different Inset Spacing makes it more adjustable.

More Text Frame & Type options like: Inset Spacing, Auto Fit, Columns and Bullet & Num Lists
I highly appraise adding the much needed Vertical Text Alignment feature from indesign to Illustrator. While they are at it I would like to request more Text Frame & Type features to be migrated over from Indesign. Like Inset Spacing, Auto Fit, Columns and Bullet & Numbered Lists .
Why? Due to Illustrator having more flexible and abundant creativity oriented vector design features I often pick Illustrator over Indesign to create single page designs like flyers or posters. Having more control over type would speed up the design workflow significantly. Lack of Type control is the only thing that causes…

Word count
Please add a words count in Illustrator. In Indesign this is also a missing feature (at lest for the whole document) but I see it has been already requested...in Illustrator it would be more than welcome.

Transparency modes for coloured fonts in AI (Fontself Plugin)
Hi, I'm using Fontself in Illustrator. I designed a coloured typeface, all is good so far but when I type a text, and try to apply the multiply mode in transparency when selecting the text, nothing really happens as it would happen with any normal font (please see screen capture for reference). Is there any way to integrate this feature in Illustrator, where we can adjust letters' transparency and transfer modes of coloured fonts?

Make the Touch Type Tool work both sides
OK, I'm having this "workflow" issue with the Touch Type Tool.
I like to be able to move 1 character at a time, rotate, move, scale.
But I'm a bit annoyed because SOMETIMES, I'd love it to NOT change the text after. So I usually have to reverse-compensate by making negative kerning on the next character.
See the image attached :
1. I justified my type between the 2 green margins.
-> Nice.
2. I change the H character (scale/rotation)
-> Getting out of the green margin.
3. I change the character after (negative kerning)
-> Back into nice green…7 votes -
Typeface recognition and OCR.
OCR would be great from images. Typeface recognition would be even better, but I would like to see that implemented better than what's currently implemented in Photoshop, which is not very good at identifying fonts other than fairly standard ones. Sensei might be a good fit for this. Please take a look at WhatTheFont.com and make the recognition at least as good as that.

Enable 2017 functionality of marquee selecting text without exiting text tool
In 2017 CC Illustrator (and 2016 I believe), I could marquee select text on a text box in scope to edit text. Now in 2018, any time I am working in a text box and click-down outside the scope of the textbox, it immediately exits the text box and creates a new one. This is problematic for me when I am working with text and want to highlight portions of text but need to start the marquee selection outside of the text and drag it in. It results in alot of redundant re-selection and very careful precision to avoid further…

Fix warp type effects
This has probably be stated before, but has long been an issue with warping text. It plain sucks, especially on an arc unless you use the type on a path tool.
Many moons ago there was a plug-in called Kai's Power Tools, KPT Vector Tools. It worked perfectly with one click and than for those that know Kai the creator vanished and updates were never made. It stopped working at Illustrator 9 for me.
I am sure at Adobe there are many programming geniuses that can make the current warp effects work much better.

Don’t drop the current character selection in text when I switch between documents
If you select a portion of a text in Illustrator and switch to a different app and back — the selection stays in place.
But if I switch between Illustrator documents/tabs — the selection gets lost. This makes editing of two or more documents at the same time very inconvenient, effectively loosing my data about the selection made.6 votes -
Make Increase / decrease font size hotkeys to respect chosen Font Height Options
Font Height Options are amazing.
It’s almost a perfect feature to my taste... but when I hit Font Size Step Up / Down or Point Size Up / Down (Shift + Ctrl/Cmd + ./, and Alt/Opt + Shift + Ctrl/Cmd + ./,) — Illustrator adds the chosen Size/Leading value (from Preferences > Type) to the Em Box size anyway, and not the x-height or the Cap height I chose to work with. So, say, with chosen step 0.5 mm and x-height 15 mm I get 15.267 mm instead of 15.5 mm as the next size up, or 16.335 mm instead…

Add option to scale point type from the baseline, rather than bounding box
It would be really useful to be able to scale text from the baseline - often I have text positioned in a layout and want to resize it, but as it scales from the bounding box it then requires lining up again.
I'd suggest a tool that allows the user to scale from the text baseline. for multiline text there would probably need to be a way of selecting which line to scale from - maybe a first / last line toggle, and an option of placing a cursor and that would be the line to scale from?
I know…
