Today artboards have only a tiny 1px border, black for the active one and gray for others.
If you wish to be able to customize these — upvote this request, please: Allow to change color & width of border / edges for artboards (all and active)

An error occurred while saving the comment It is the only thing basically that tells an artboard from a shape.
Do not remove it. Make it more prominent.
Even better — add a variable in the Prefs file for users to control it.
Some will set 0px, some 5px. -

An error occurred while saving the comment Andrew, have you tried Phantasm by AstuteGraphics? It might have a functionality you look for.

An error occurred while saving the comment Mehmet, what version are you using? Below 29.2 or higher?
A similar bug was reported here — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/49111304 — but it was fixed. -

An error occurred while saving the comment A beautiful demo by Monika Gause on the topic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=romoq5s-Z3kSelect two groups, make a compound path, apply a stroke, try to expand the stroke — won’t work.
Ai is not smart to remove the groups (but is doing this with a singular group). An error occurred while saving the comment Yep, it should.
By the way, Mark. This rather small entry seems to be a copy of a larger general cry I made in 2020: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/41110042
Would you mind me merging these? An error occurred while saving the comment Here is another discussion of the problem:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/19458141/illustrator-grouped-objects-inside-of-a-compound-pathAn error occurred while saving the comment Leads to problems like this https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/44390481
An error occurred while saving the comment Dawn, indeed! Illustrator refuses to expand the stroke in the skyline object. This should be studied and fixed.
However, there are workarounds.
You still can use Object > Flatten Transparency to make it expanded.
The other option is to locate the object in Layers panel and study the object itself — you’ll see that it is a group that has several groups inside that have two duplicates of the same compound path at the bottom level. Once you ungroup all several times and release a compound path (Object > Compound Path > Release), you'll get yet another group, inside of this compound path! Ungroup it, make compound path again (Object > Compound Path > Make) — and finally you will be able to expand the stroke.
See, Illustrator allows to have groups inside of a compound path, and this leads to this and other problems. There is a bug report about it, please vote — https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/41110042-groups-inside-compound-pathsAnd the third option would be using Offset Path instead of stroke to be expanded and that substracted with the Shape Builder. It still requires a cleaner objects, but saves two steps in the process.
Thanks for reporting the issue!

An error occurred while saving the comment I also offered AstuteGraphics to solve this problem with their VectorFisrtAid plugin, and they did it in A DAY.
Now it would be able to detect groups inside compound paths and fix them.
It does not mean that Illustrator team should not fix it, on the contrary.
Please vote for this, if you are agree.

An error occurred while saving the comment Humyra , by 'navigator' do you mean the Navigator panel or the Artboards panel?

An error occurred while saving the comment Not new, yeah. This happens in older versions as well. I checked CS6, and it does exactly the same. Quite confusing, never liked it. Thanks for the report!
As a workaround, I suggest using this script that is more honest and is more powerful (paid, but if you need it often, worth it):

An error occurred while saving the comment I was never able to stumble upon it or reproduce it intentionally :(
On one hand it makes me happy (because this would suck!), on the other hand I WISH to have it — because this would have helped me to push it further. No matter what method I try: pasting each one or typing it anew, using Tab to go to the next one, renaming all at once (we can now select all artboards with Artboard Tool or in the panel, hit Enter to open Artboard Options and enter the common name and Ai will use it and add numbers, like we can do in Explorer/Finder with files)... nothing works, the names stick for me, with the panela closed, collapsed, reopened, file close, Ai relaunched...
Please try to reproduce it in the new file, give the EXACT steps (the video helps, even though it didn’t for me), and list all the specs you can. If the test file keeps behaving like this each time you try — share it (perhaps it’s something within it that makes the bug pop!)
Time to figure this out finally. An error occurred while saving the comment Steve, how do you 'rename all artboard at once'? You mean consecutively, one by one?
Can you reproduce this behaviour exactly, if you try to do it from from the scratch? If yes — please provide a video demo and the exact steps. An error occurred while saving the comment Sounds painful :(
Can you check Preferences > Units > Identify Objects By, if you have Object name there or XML ID? I doubt it is related, but so far I have no other guesses.
Can you also record a video that shows exactly how it happens? An error occurred while saving the comment Not a feature request but a bug report.

An error occurred while saving the comment I ahve no idea why this restriction exists, but I workaround it by placing a no-fill-no-strok rectangle. Then it allows to export it. Nonetheless, I don’t think it should prevent us from doing it. Display a warning, to make sure the users intends to have a white/transparent image, would be fine for me.

An error occurred while saving the comment Christopher, any changes?
An error occurred while saving the comment I think it’s time to backup Preferences folder (for the am to study later), https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html
The reset Preferences and check if this becomes any better.
40 seconds is a nightmare...An error occurred while saving the comment What a weird thing.
I received a blank document from Christopher with 2 A4 artboards in it.
Whenever I launch it, with or without 3D and Materials panel opened, without or without unused extras, with or without PDF-compatibility, it takes Ai 13 to open it and 13 seconds to close it.
The same document created based on my own Print document profile (unchanged form the stock one), took 5 seconds the first time, and only 2 seconds each time I tested it later. So these documents (attached to this comment) are virtually identical (except for maybe positioning on canvas), but are different when the code within is compared...
Christopher, can you try to open and close each one of these a couple of times and measure the time this takes at your side. please? Both have the PDF-compatibility disabled and all the styles-brushes-swatches removed, to make it as lightweight as possible. Does having 3D panel opened change anything? One other difference is that I didn’t get any progress bars at all, like you did. Will you get one with these files? An error occurred while saving the comment For me it’s not that clear... the very first document I create takes ~7 seconds. Then, when I try to create another one, it’s 2 seconds — with or without the panel opened.

Illustrator tries to load a ligature from the font and can’t get one. Got resolved with unchecking the 'Standard Ligatures' button in the Window > Type > OpenType panel.
If you have a similar problem with a different font, please try the same thing and comment.
An error occurred while saving the comment It seems like the font tries to replace 'ti' with a ligature, but then it fails to load one from the font itself. Unchecking the 'Standard Ligatures' button in the Window > Type > OpenType panel could help

An error occurred while saving the comment Illustrator automatically converts units if you choose to type one.
If you want to move something using points, you can type '20pt' and it will work. Applies to any field in Ai that deals with units, not only Move’s ones.
This method gives more flexibility than strict dropdowns. Does it work for you? -

An error occurred while saving the comment Hey, now Astute Graphics offers Shear as an effect: https://docs.astutegraphics.com/vectorscribe/ag-utilities-overview/ag-shear-live-effect
An error occurred while saving the comment I can’t say I need Shear EACH often, but just today I needed that.
An error occurred while saving the comment Taper can be achieved with any effect from Effect > Warp group, with Bend value set to 0, but Horizontal and Vertical Distortion tweaked.
An error occurred while saving the comment A Shear can be calculated with a rotation and scale, we know. There is even a script to do that, http://sysys.blog.shinobi.jp/Entry/53/
But we still need is a separate thing!

The team is able to reproduce this in house and is going to investigate this
An error occurred while saving the comment It seems indeed the panel doesn’t get any button pressed once per session if is is collapsed. If any operation gets done with the panel open, the proper button becomes pressed.
The confusion I get with some things not getting aligned is most probably because I select only some point of the object, expecting them to align 'to artboard' — while the default mode Ai uses for these is 'to selection'. Then I open the panel and realize I don’t see the current mode. Even though I know this, it doesn’t really prevent me from getting surprised each time.

An error occurred while saving the comment Feels like a similar problem to this one:

And also mention the link to this report for the reference: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/46979344
Thank you!
I’m not seeing this shadow anymore. The last time I noticed it was in CS6.
