An error occurred while saving the comment Melinda, looks like one of your Shift keys is stuck.
I tried to simulate that and got the same behaviour as you described.
I suggest that some app (never caught Ai on that though) must have forgot to release it. Try to restart you computer and check if it is fixed. -

I am happy to share that we have fixed this bug in our latest release – 25.4.1 which is available worldwide now.
Going forward, our goal is to fix as many top User-Voice bugs as possible and as frequently as possible. Given the nature of the fixes, some of the bugs will take a longer time to fix, but we are on it.
You can update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html
Thank you for all the feedback. Keep it coming!
An error occurred while saving the comment I can confirm that.

An error occurred while saving the comment Hi, Juergen.
Adobe product managers and engineers monitor this place occasionally and take ideas into an account based on votes and their own vision. There is no a threshold that can be set for ideas (unlike with bugs). But you can evaluate it yourself if you scroll the list sorted by most voices to see when they get taken to the development phase.I personally believe that requesting features is the only way for Adobe staff to understand what users want from Ai. Font Height options, Snap to Glyph, Large canvas, Viewport rotation — all of these are possible because we asked for them.
Please do share.
I understand that it takes a lot of time (I made more than a hundred), but it really helps. Just don’t expect immediate reaction. Ai is a complex beast. -

An error occurred while saving the comment And hi again :)
Because Ai does not know about your intentions. Maybe setting a stroke color is exactly what you wanted to do.
But as always, you might want to vote for a more general request, that asks for setting a fill / stroke directly, holding Alt modifier: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/44104935
Thanks for reporting and requesting!

1 voteOne can apply a new opacity mask to an object that already has it, if you group this object first — then apply a mask to this container. However, if your object is a single group already, Illustrator won’t allow you to create another group (for obvious reason, to prevent an accidental 'group wrapping'). You can workaround it if you group it with a dummy object and delete it after, or use a free Group Anyway script: https://onthehead.com/ais/group003/
An error occurred while saving the comment Yes, grouping is essential when you work with opacity (and not clipping) masks. Good luck!
An error occurred while saving the comment Kam, double clipping works fine for me, both with hotkeys or menu commands.
If I apply clipping mask and then try to clip the clip group with another object — I get the 'desired result' from step 4.This might be a bug... That is why I am asking what is your process in steps. Clipping mask or opacity mask? What do you use, hotkeys or menus? What OS? Please tell more.
Opacity mask, by the way, works differently. If you have opacity mask already for and object A, selecting both A and B and making another opacity mask will move B into A’s mask, so you might want to group A first.
An error occurred while saving the comment It is possible and works for me.
How exactly do you try to clip a clipped object? -

An error occurred while saving the comment Or we can all have this:
https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/32477365--paper-or-transparent-swatch
It would allow any ragged edges, right? An error occurred while saving the comment Why not use opacity 0% and knockout for this?

An error occurred while saving the comment So you grab your objects and you dielines, located on separate layers, and apply Object > Repeat > Grid (or any other), right? When you do this, both object get moved to a special 'Repeat' container... which is obviously a single entity that can be located at one layer only, as any other object in Illustrator.
Therefore yes, a repeat object can’t be located at two layers at once, and undoubtedly will never can.You should apply repeats separately for each layer’s art.
And I don’t think that moving dielines to a separate layer after expanding is such a big effort. If you use a specific spot color for these, you can select one, then Select Same Stroke Color and move them to a layer needed easily.

An error occurred while saving the comment Helen, you should use File > Export for Screens (I know, a user won’t even thing about using it when he exports PDFs for printing — but it’s Illustrator we are talking about, it never had dedicated 'Export to PDF' to begin with).
There you can choose a PDF format and get all your artboards as a separate files, each one containing only one artboard inside (and not all canvas, as an ordinary Save As to PDF does).
Does it help?
Nice illustrations! ...and a nasty bug. I believe I had something similar once, but was not able to isolate the thing.
Having this file and proofs on hands will help to fix it finally!
I won’t ask you to share the document here, but please send it to sharewithai@adobe.com for the team to test it and see what is happening exactly. Please provide clear steps and a small video recording if you are able to record one.
