I like your idea too. Mine is probably simpler to add, but would still require manual steps for everything to be embedded. When alert for either missing links or fonts come up when opening a pdf, I immediately hit cancel, open a new document and place the image instead. I was thinking there could simply be an option to 'cancel and place image in a new document' added to the dialog. see attached.

If you want to keep a cropped image as a live linked image, you should Clip it instead. Press the Mask button (in Control or Properties panel) and Ai will create and select a rectangular path with the same dimensions. Transform this path with any tool you like or with the bounding box, and the image inside will remain unembedded.

Crop command, on the other hand, is intended specifically for 'physical' cropping, and since Ai won’t edit the original placed image, it gets embedded and then cropped.

Just use the method you need.

Please comment back if it works for you.

I am happy to share that we have fixed this bug in our latest release – 24.3.0 which is available worldwide now.

Going forward, our goal is to fix as many top User-Voice bugs as possible and as frequently as possible. Given the nature of the fixes, some of the bugs will take a longer time to fix, but we are on it.

You can update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html

Thank you for all the feedback. Keep it coming!

I noticed that nothing happens when you right click a color in your Swatches window. Wouldn't it be amazing if when you did, you were given the option to select all fills or strokes in your document assigned the color? In my workflow, I will commonly need to see all colors used within a document, and I do so by selecting All and then hitting New Swatch Group in the Swatches window. I can then see every color, but if there is one in there that I need to quickly locate (I don't want to dig through layers) it's just not easy to do. This reverse-color selection model could be very quick and powerful IMO. It should list these three options in order after right clicking: Select All Fills and Strokes Containing Color, Select All Fills Containing Color, Select All Strokes Containing Color.

well said! yes we had to find and refine a script in order to get what we needed for small format purposes. I would also include an option to add a white outline to your crops (it's essentially a duplicate of the black strokes sent to the back with a thicker weight. this helps for visibility of the marks no matter what color the design is. if you're interested in the script for now hit me up! oh and Adobe, please just remove the Crop Marks from the Effects dropdown - completely useless.

I fully agree with original poster. This should be native in the Effects (probably within 3D?) The current methods for achieving this are not clean (numerous overlapping copies, creating stair-stepped diagonals which is awful in production environments like cut vinyl or just folks who appreciate clean, simple graphics). If anyone is interested in a script I've created to achieve this in Illustrator give me a shout (that includes you, Adobe)!
