An error occurred while saving the comment I totally get it. Well... the thing is it works correctly.
We all should not confuse Save and Export, Load and Import. Ai once made it confusing with 'Save a PDF' concept, blurring the line, and making it hard for users to get WHY it works this way. But there are reasons.PDFs aren’t meant for editing.
PDFs are designed to be viewed and printed.
Illustrator is not a native PDF editor: PDFs can have a bunch of things Ai knows nothing about (videos, forms, interactive buttons, triangular meshes, etc), Ai can creates structures that won’t survive in PDFs (repeat objects, area type texts, dimensions, bleeds — as you said).
PDF is not Ai’s native format. PGF is (that is .ai).
Importing PDFs is IMPORTING.
The magical option just forces Ai to store both native PGF and exported PDF written in one file.
'Opening' a PDF is a lie, Ai either imports one or reads back the compatibility content.
Yeah, I know, we all have to edit PDFs in Ai, because Ai seems the best tool available... I do it myself.Artboards aren’t pages — in Illustrator. They can overlap, nest... many design tasks relate on it heavily (maps specifically).
There’s also the 'pasteboard' where people can have a bunch of WIP stuff they expect to load fully when a file is read back in — FULL compatibility, right? But PDFs can’t have the pasteboard. It’s either touches and artboard and stays in pages generated, or gets deleted... but only when a PDF gets assembled and exported.So, again, if you need to have the 'Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities' enabled BUT for Ai to clean up stuff that doesn’t touch the exported artboard/page (and thus breaking the 'original Ai/PGF document stays untouched approach') — please upvote the request I shared, https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/32252662
It would mean people loose pasteboard content, so it is not 'how it should work', but 'how it could work' — thus an option, a feature request, rather than a bug or 'it works wrong'. Remember, user data is sacred. Ai does its best to honor it.Please raise the awareness, share with colleagues and friends.
An error occurred while saving the comment @M-L, when you read the produced PDFs back, Ai reads the original .ai (PGF) data within, and not imports the PDF data.
This is what 'Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities' option does — and this one gets enabled based on the PDF preset chosen in the Format Settings dialog within the Export for Screens dialog. If you choose one that does not have this option included (the dialog does a bad job with informing about that, but these are ALL but Illustrator Default, High Quality Print, Press Quality.

I created two identical RGB TIFFs in Ps, and saved one using LZW compression and another one without it (attached).
When placed into a new document (RGB or CMYK), in any order, it doesn't crash.There must be something else then... Please tell more about the setup and share the test files that lead to the crash.

It turns out some AMD Software uses this key. Disabling it solved the problem. If you are sure you don’t have any AMD software at all, and you can’t find anything else installed that might steal it, comment back.

I had a similar problem back ago in the age of Skype, with it stealing my Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D hotkey, at the super low OS level — very rude of it. Both glad and a bit sad the app is gone. Teams is meh. Can you see the hotkey displayed in Type menu next to the command’s name?
By any chance — do you have CapsLock pressed?
Have you installed any apps recently that can potentially mess with keys? If you run Illustrator and nothing but Illustrator — does the hotkey work?
Have you noticed any other similar command failing their shortcut? -

The Select Preset dropdown is visible for me there, right after the 'Artboard', when I pick the Artboard Tool (which switches Ai into the Artboard mode). -

An error occurred while saving the comment I confirm! Ai refuses to create a pattern from a piece of embedded raster with Object > Pattern > Make, UNTIL we create a pattern with drag-n-drop. And then it 'hey, I can! wow!' and allows it 🤦♂️

An error occurred while saving the comment Speaking of solutions we currently have, Lazy Nezumi should be mentioned also, a universal helper app that brings stabilization options into any other app.
But — Windows only.
15 days trial, one-time purchase, $35.Both stabilizing options in Affinity Designer are good, and their pulled string works better than Photoshop’s one, to my taste: absolute VS relative value, better depiction of the rope itself.

I merely help to organize the place, split, merge, reply, promote and help when I can, but the main drive force is VOTES, our unified voice.InDesign got their Flex Layout panel recently (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/indesign/using/flex-layout-panel-overview.html) — but InDesign IS a dedicated layout app. My personal opinion on Figma’s layouts is that being a web service, they piggyback modern CSS rules. They just offer a wrapper (a good one, but it still uses the might of a browser). Illustrator has its own weight of amazingly different workflows, tied into real-world production. Illustrator is a general versatile tool, I’d say, and the team has to chase many rabbits at once.

Some report it doesn’t get launch on Macs... I suppose you can address the developer if the tool suits you.

An error occurred while saving the comment Take a look at similar buttons in Paragraph panel: these say Align Left and Align Right, and do a very similar thing for lines in paragraph. Both 'left' and 'right' belong to the horizontal axis. I understand you mean 'move left TO meet the vertical line', but I also understand why the movement is more important.
These Align buttons’ icons could have no reference lines displayed (and many apps don’t).I respect your position, your request is valid, but I wouldn’t hope much to get it changed...

What you offer contradicts the acknowledged paradigm. Even CSS that this page uses to display things uses 'horizontal' to describe it (https://www.w3schools.com/css/css_align_horizontal.asp)An error occurred while saving the comment Taking first three buttons for an example, this is most probably because objects get moved along the horizontal axis to match the vertically oriented reference. This horizontal movement is more prominent on canvas, and it’s what gets changed (the X coordinate, the horizontal one).

An error occurred while saving the comment Works fine on Windows... any combination with numbers or letters get displayed fine (except for Select > Same > Object, which has a Unicode White Square □ in front of each displayed combination — these probably should indent the hotkeys to the right side, and it never happens)

Simplify ignores point selection when 'Convert to Straight Lines' is checked (should be a report, I think), and all segments of the path become straight, even if we select specific points of a path.
So for the partial selection the 'Auto-*Simplify method remains' the fastest one... but it requires us to select these points first (with the star-t and endpoints!), and it likes to add handles, so it remains a weak method.Pathfinder Add method, as noticed, works great only for closed and non-self-intersecting paths....
So for now it’s either plugins or scripts. I tried to resurrect the script I mentioned using LLMs, and it seems to perform well:

Please try it and see if it fails at any point or underperforms.An error occurred while saving the comment You can try to use Object > Path > Simplify for this.
In most cases it’s able to detect unnecessary anchors with its Auto-Simplify mode. If it keeps some, pressing the 'Advanced Panel' button (the 'gear one) in the floating bar would allow you to enable 'Convert to Straight Lines' — with 1° for Corner Pont Angle Threshold it’d purge these rather effectively.
Please try the method and write back if you find it failing for you. An error occurred while saving the comment A script solution exists for it (independent to the 'Display Print Size at 100% Zoom' option)... but it makes the viewport jump momentarily:

So it remembers the viewport position, zooms using the native command, and restores the center.
This makes it work for any doc, CMYK or RGB (that is print or screen intent).
A simpler script,

```
would work only with 'Display...' option enabled. I don’t know which state of it you use more.
If you hate the shifting, you can press Cmd/Ctrl + 1 once, run the script with:

alert(app.activeDocument.activeView.zoom);
```
remember the value and replace the "1" with it, that would fit your screen’s actual resolution. But in this case it would work for only one intent.
Testing these are simple if you drag a JSX file with the code inside into the app.The main script would require a hotkey to run swiftly, and Ai doesn’t allow to set these up easily... the only readily available method is to install a script (by putting it into the dedicated Scripts folder) and create an action that calls it. Rather cumbersome.
A native option or a command would definitely be better!

If you have something selected, typing in 100% in the Zoom Level field (which is the only one element in the bottom row to not have a tooltip, BTW) will result into re-centering the view to this selection — while double-clicking the Zoom tool icon does not move the view.
So we have THREE ways to change the view: to center to the selection, to center to the artboard, to no center to anything... but only one can be called with a hotkey (which a lot of user prefer).We need all three as menu commands we can assign hotkeys to.

Interesting. I like this one...
It’s like having Properties, but without Properties opened.
Won’t work for all cases, but can help in cases when people work in creative chaos with all the panels being relocated constantly and overlapping each other.
