Are you still able to move the selected object using arrow keys?
Finally, what OS and what version of Ai are you using specifically? -

InDesign — indeed puts each copy on top of each original.An error occurred while saving the comment It’s hardly 'suddenly'.
This behavior is native for Illustrator, and was like this for decades.
Take a look at these three tests, recorded in Ai 10, Ai CS6, and the latest Ai Beta 28.5.0.66.As you can see, Illustrator puts duplicated objects above the topmost originally selected one.
It becomes even funnier when we some of the selected objects are inside of groups — they get ripped out the groups (not shown in the GIFs though).This is not a bug, it’s just how it always was...
But you are totally correct. Same is true for the most of Paste commands — none of them honors the original structure, and all the copies go either at the very top of the layer, or above/below the topmost/bottommost one for In Front / Back commands...I am converting it to a feature request instead and adding my vote.

But the fact the document is opened as an Untitled document, clearly signals that the PDF you try to import was saved without Preserve Illustrator Editing Compatibilities option, or was somehow changed outside of Illustrator. Illustrator can OPEN only those PDFs that were saved/exported in Ai with this option enabled (basically reading back the hidden .ai inner copy within the PDF), and IMPORTS all other PDFs — in this case the thumbnail can be an older one.Again, hard to tell anything without more details about how it was produced and the actual file...
Hope it won’t repeat for you.An error occurred while saving the comment Kamilla, alas, thumbnails for PDFs can mismatch from the actual contents of the document. These get generated once when a file is originally created, but stays unchanged if a user chooses (or rather chooses not) to update the thumbnail when a file is resaved/reexported further — it all depends on the routine used to re-generate a PDF...
Also, when a PDF gets optimized, there is an option to remove all the contents outside of the artboards. To ensure a PDF gets imported/opened the way it was saved/exported, you must enable the Preserve Illustrator Editing Compatibilities option, or chose a preset that has it enabled.
So it’s not an Illustrator’s fault at all... it just displays what is written as miniature preview within the file and imports what’s in it. -

Make sure that Mockup-related feature components are added (three of current four, except the Retype one).

Does it work, when you try to mockup a much simpler object, like a simple ellipse or rectangle? or try to use a different image? -

An error occurred while saving the comment Nope, it never was a thing (I even checked a couple of versions).
Most probably you confuse this with a similar option Photoshop has: Thumbnail Contents > Layer Bounds / Entire Document.I agree this should be consistent with the way Ai handles it.
Previously, rasterizing a clipping group would use the clipped contents bounds, and not the mask (now fixed).
But the symbols still suffer from this, here is a request to get it improved: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/43447725Technically not a bug.

Eurotunnel is a funny thing! And when a whole country is built around certain driving rules... I don’t mean it’s no possible to change the side people drive (cases exist), it’s just never easy.I understand your sarcasm, and I share some of the notions myself.
They apply both ways: I like some things Photoshop does better, and some things Ai nailed (and some thing both do very poorly).
But you can’t unite American English and British English back together. And Ps and Ai were never even siblings. Count them as cousins. Or better as employees in a uniform. Actually, I think metaphors makes it worse.But people learn different languages and embrace different cultures all the time. Don’t deny us the ability to learn a new program.

If you change a default behavior (either from Ai or Ps side), an army of users who know how it works will get very mad. More mad than any user can be who comes from Ps and learns how a tool in Ai works.Despite Ps and Ai (and InD and AE) look very similar, they are very much different, come from different sources, teams, backgrounds...
Eraser in Ai works like this, probably because it follows the way Line works in Ai, or any other tool that creates a shape here.

Ps deals with pixels.There are many requests here at UV to make Ai looks like InDesign (from those who learnt InD first), or Corel Draw (from those who came in Ai from there), or like Figma (there are pretty new in general), or anything else...
It never does get solved by mimicking... It gets solved by learning and training one’s mind.However, requests like yours are still important — so thank you for not being silent and requesting it.
These help to make the team to be aware of the paradigms shifting and to adapt Ai to those that are important. -

An error occurred while saving the comment Jon, there are 5 types of brushes in Illustrator:
calligraphic, scatter, art, bristle, pattern.
2 of them do not support and never supported dashes: calligraphic and bristle.
They are just designed for different purposes.The brush tip you show in your screenshot is a calligraphic '5 pt. Round' brush (that’s why Stroke panel says 1 pt, but the displayed weight is 5 pt)
To see the dashes, you’d have to remove the brush tip from the path. You can do it from the Brushes panel ('Remove Brush Stroke' button), or from the same looking controls in other panels, like Appearance or Control.This is not an uncommon topic.

An error occurred while saving the comment Oh, I get it. Sure, having so many copies of the same image can bloat a file... Illustrator sadly don’t store copies of the same embedded image as instances. Or did you have it as a placed image?
And I prefer to disable the PDF-compatibility option myself, so not questions here.
As for the file — alas, only to recreate anew. Good luck and have patience (the most precious trait when working with Illustrator).An error occurred while saving the comment I am afraid the file got corrupted :( Illustrator can’t recognize it as a valid document and treats as text, I assume...
That’s a LARGE size for an Ai document! I have no idea what happened to it, but the larger the document is, the more chances for the saving process to go wrong :( Sorry, I am afraid it can’t be fixed...
If you used PDF Compatibility option (it is enabled by default), perhaps you can try to rename it to .pdf from .ai and use the PDF content to recover at least something? Try Acrobat and then resave the file (if it reads it) and then try to import it into Ai. -

Does THIS particular problem happens for you (I suppose it does, since you voted)? Have you created and shared the test file? Did you record a video, as request by the team? Did you provided the details for your graphic driver and OS in general?
Please do. Nothing less than this won’t really help.Just in case, so that you know (and as far as I know) — Home Screen is made by a dedicated team, across all the apps in CCD, at the same time. You can imagine what limitations this impose... CEP or not — it’s easier to make it work as it is, as a separate addition, than to maintain numerous injections.

Can you please share an example of such a file, please?
Just in case also: what is your OS specifically and the Ai build you are using? Does it matter if you place it in an RGB or a CMYK doc? -
