Blob Brush size is wrong

I select blob or paint brush, pick the size etc, go to use it and it turns to a totally different size and brush. Tried resetting it all, closing the app and reopening, and check to ensure its set to what I want, but it changes to something different everytime

    I am using a mouse (not tablet) & despite selecting a specific size brush - it always changes the thickness of what is drawn. If I "undo" the last drawn piece it immediately enlarges the brush to a huge size, despite the selection being 1 pt. The only way to continue is to save, close & reopen the drawing

    I have the same issue with blob tool when I pick a different size it will only draw on 1pt it won't change sizes. I reinstalled illustrator and that didn't help at all.
