Inconsistent line thickness with Surface pen + touch zoom
Drawing pressure sensitive lines with the Paintbrush Tool using the Surface pen, on a Surface Pro 4, will result in line thickness inconsistent with the preview shown while drawing. See the attached video for a easy visual reference.
System information:
Surface Pro 4 + Surface pen that comes with the device (not the new one sold separately)
Windows 10 1803 (17134.648)
Illustrator CC 2019 (23.0.2)
Steps to reproduce:
- Open Illustrator a Surface Pro device for this test
- Create a new document
- Select the Paintbrush Tool, then select the Touch Calligraphic Brush
- With the Surface pen, draw a line with variable pressure
- Notice the line preview during drawing and the finished line after lifting the pen are identical
- Pinch to zoom on the screen with your fingers, all the way up to 500% so the issue is easily noticeable
- Draw another line with the Surface pen, vary pressure during the drawing
- Notice the line thickness during the preview is rather thin, but once you lift the pen the final line is actually much thicker!
- Switch to the Selection Tool and then switch back to the Paintbrush Tool
- Draw another pressure variable line, thickness will now works as expected
This issue is related to the method of zooming, let's continue from above:
- Create a new document
- Draw a pressure variable line with the pen, thickness works as expected
- Use the zoom dropdown menu at the bottom left of the Illustrator window, set it to 600%
- Draw a pressure variable line with the pen, thickness issue just like with pinch to zoom above
- Switching back and forward between the Selection Tool and Paintbrush Tool makes it works as expected again
Ok, so far so good, the zoom is causing this issue. But there's one more use case that breaks this causality. Let's do it:
- Create a new document
- Draw a pressure variable line with the pen, thickness works as expected
- Zoom in only using the CTRL & + keyboard shortcut instead
- Draw a pressure variable line with the pen, thickness works as expected instead of displaying the bug mentioned in the other situations!
Hope this helps you track the bug and fix it quickly. Any questions just let me know and I'll try to help.
Thanks!
