Multiple Users Open Same File and Overwrite Work
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro
When I have a file open, my coworker can open the file and does not get notified that the file is already opened or locked. He can work in the file and save, and it overwrites my version. Then when I go to save, I get notified that the file was 'modified outside of Illustrator, do I want to continue?" If you click yes, it overwrites his work and his work is lost. Is this a bug that it does not indicate that the file is already open by another user?

Hi Laura, if I may, most of the "squared corners icon" apps , preexisting internet and big networks were never really compatible with server work.
illustrator doesn't have an embedded system to "lock" a file like inDesign does (the temporary .idlk file created at the opening of the document).
On an enterprise network, it would be at the IT level to set badges lock/release authorization to opened files.
So, that's technically not "a bug", but "as designed".
There are a few "feature requests" corresponding to your needs, i think you should add your voice and example to some of those : https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-feature-requests?query=network
