Saving to iCloud Drive creates multiple versions of the same file.
Saved a file to a folder on iCloud Drive (on the Desktop with iCloud Drive Desktop & Document Sync enabled). The file is still open in Illustrator, yet there are 3 versions of the file in the folder.
What I am assuming is happening is that the file is being taken off of the desktop and saved to the cloud, but then Illustrator is rewriting the file because it can't see the original file. This hasn't happened before with Illustrator until the 2020 updates and I've saved all my files to iCloud Drive folders since it became a thing.
I don't know who's at fault or whose bug it is, but this has got to stop.

I keep revisiting this because it just keeps happening and it's so so SO SO SO annoying! It HAS to stop. I go through phases when it's ok and then when it saves 8 versions. Maybe something to do with how quick icloud backs things up?

This is happening to me too. Is there any way to fix it. I had no issues before and all of a sudden with the update I have multiple files and it is a becoming an iCloud space hog! Is there a way to stop it from creating a new file every time?

I've had the same Issue. My Macbook keeps offloading the file to iCloud Drive in the middle of the work session and then Illustrator creates a new version exactly as you described, resulting in the screenshot below.
One way to fix is to add ".nosync' to your folder name which will keep it from offloading to iCloud. Otherwise this is very annoying.
