Embedding a placed file no longer triggers the profile mismatch dialog (changed between 28.7.7 and 30.8.2)
Environment:
Illustrator 30.8.2, Windows: dialog does NOT appear
Illustrator 2024 28.7.7, Windows: dialog appears
Illustrator CS6 16.0.0, Windows: dialog appears
I do not have 2025 installed, so the change happened somewhere between 28.7.7 and 30.8.2.
Colour settings used (unchanged for years, verified before testing):
Preserve embedded profiles for both RGB and CMYK. Ask When Opening and Ask When Pasting both enabled. Saved settings file still selected, nothing was reset by an update.
Summary:
Placing a file as a link and then embedding it used to raise the profile mismatch dialog when the incoming file carried a different CMYK profile than the document. In 30.8.2 it embeds silently and the CMYK numbers come through unchanged.
Steps to reproduce:
Create a document with a CMYK profile that differs significantly from a standard press profile. I use a printer profile for textile output.
File > Place a PDF that carries a different CMYK profile, for example ISO Coated v2, and keep it as a link.
Embed the link from the Links panel.
Expected: the profile mismatch dialog offers Convert (preserve appearance) or Don’t Convert (preserve numbers), as it does in 28.7.7 and CS6.
Actual: the file embeds with no dialog and the CMYK values are preserved without asking.
Impact: this is silent. Artwork prepared for press CMYK lands in a document with a very different profile and looks correct in neither. On a textile profile where cyan sits far from press, a logo ends up visibly wrong and nothing warns you. The only way to get the choice back is to cut the artwork out, paste it into a document using the source profile, copy it there and paste it back, which does still raise the paste mismatch dialog.
Request: restore the profile mismatch prompt on embed, or document the change if it was intentional.
