Color Picker Selects White Instead of Black
Very bizarre problem:
- I will create a new object using the pen tool.
- I select the Stroke Color icon and choose black for a border color.
- Illustrator will invariably select white instead of black. I will have to go back to the color picker and select black again for it to stick. Really irritating.

still happening in 2023

Does anybody have steps to reproduce it?
Or at least a small recording, video or GIF? -

Same here. It's a bug that's been around for ages. You'd say this is a minor regression in the code of the color picker...
For what it's worth: for me, this only happens when the current color of an object is transparent.
As for Andacar's comment, I also experience the color selector to cancel any color selection when dragging outside of the color picker border. Separate issue, but still one of the things that is wrong with the color picker.

Hey Brian. Well, I'm running Windows 10, so it's nice to know at least it isn't some OS issue. There are other similar things that you have to remember that are different. For instance, in Photoshop when you click and drag around inside the color picker you don't have to worry about going outside its border. But in Illustrator if you accidentally drag the pointer outside the color picker border it will stop selecting colors. So much the joy.
Oh well, could be worse I suppose.

Same issue here- even using different computers. It happens on my 2016 iMac, 2015 MacBook, and 2017 iMacPro- each running a different OS. It's pretty much every time you initially select black as an outline color - regardless of how careful you are. It's becoming part of my workflow and it shouldn't.
