Can't change the color of a gradient stop to an existing swatch
Most infuriating Gradient Swatch forever bug. This bug has been persistent through the past several updates and I don't understand why Adobe is ignoring such an infuriating bug that should not be that hard to correct. Click on the gradient stop and select a swatch from the popup swatches palette and no effect.
Please help the team to find the steps to reproduce this problem. Record a video that has the full workspace visible.

Dear Egor,
now I understand the term pseudo-panel ;-) Thank you.
and yes then - Selecting a swatch for a gradient stop, called from a pseudo-panel with a double-click, only works for me when the Gradient tool is picked.
-
A 'pseudo-panel' is what I call that panel that pops when we click a color chip. In your case, it’s when you double-click a gradient stop. Why 'pseudo'? Well, it’s not a standalone true draggable consistent panel... it’s a shortcut to swatches, but not THE Swatches panel. A dropdown panel might also work.
Apart from this — yes, this is what I see is happening... but still the team struggles to reproduce it, at various machines :(
Something is missing. At least there is a workaround so far. -

Dear Egor,
I am not entirely sure what you mean by a “pseudo-panel.”
What I am experiencing is the following:
when I am in the Gradient panel and click on a gradient stop to change the corresponding swatch, it does not work. In this state, the Gradient Annotator is also not active.
However, when I activate “Edit Gradient Mode” via the Properties panel, the Gradient Annotator appears immediately. Only then am I able to change the color stop via the Gradient panel by clicking on a color stop.
I hope this clarifies what I am seeing on my side.
Best regards,

The 'Edit Gradient' button just picks the Gradient tool (that’s why it’s not in Gradient panel if the tool is picked manually) — and the gradient annotator only gets shown with the tool picked.
So it looks like selecting a swatch for a gradient stop, called from a pseudo-panel with a double-click, only works for you when the Gradient tool is picked... correct?

Dear Ankit and Egor.
Here a video as you requested.
It appears to me that the “Edit Gradient Mode” is not always activating correctly when accessed via the Swatches panel. Also the Gradient Annotator is not visible then !!!!
When I activate "Edit Gradient" through the Properties panel, however, it consistently activates and works without any issues.
Maybe there would be a possibility to activate the "edit Gradient Mode" automatically as soon as you click on a gradient stop in the Gradient panel to change the colour ?

Hi Tanja,
I am Ankit form Illustrator Team , thanks for sharing your observation .
I also tried reproducing this issue with file you attached but unable to reproduce it.
Can you help us reproduce this issue in a new file with new object/Already made file and provide video of Complete Illustrator Window so that we can see control panel , properties panel , toolbar.Regards

Dear Egor,
I am currently on 30.1 on macOS 15.7.3.
I reset my preferences beforehand, but unfortunately that did not resolve the issue.
What I have observed is that when I switch to the Color panel, I am able to make changes, and picking a color from an object also works as expected.
It appears that “Edit Gradient Mode” is not always activating correctly when accessed via the Swatches panel.
When I activate it through the Properties panel, however, it consistently activates and works without any issues.I hope this observation helps to narrow down the cause. 🙏
Best regards,

Doesn’t happen for me, as the GIF demonstrates, at 30.1 on Windows 10...
So that must be something else, not the document.Tanja, what if you try to use other native means of changing the color of a stop? The Color panel, the Properties, the Control?
Anyway, please share the full specs of your OS.
Also backup your preferences (in case you need to restore them or the team would need to study them) and try to reset them. Many bugs suddenly vanish when these get reset (which is both good and bad). -

I have exactly the same behaviour and it is soooo annoying.
I am lucky to have Astutes's Gradient Forge, where ist is possible without a problem.
I would also like to see an easy way to add color stop colours to the swatch panel - I am struggeling with that as well.
-
I can’t reproduce it, and a global color gets assigned to a gradient stop just fine.
here are numerous factors that can limit the bug, so it can easily be localized. So no wonder Adobe ignores it, they just knew nothing about it until this report...
Does it happen for any gradient at all? Can you share a test file, please? Also full details about your setup: OS build, Ai version, etc.Furthermore, I am seeing you are an Astute Graphics user... can you please also check if you are able to change the color of the stop using their Gradient Forge plugin? To know if it’s an object problem or the panel problem or something else entirely.
