Accented characters in PDF not showing correctly
Imported PDF text has spurious spaces (and broken into different text blocks). In the source program the only difference is whether RTF is encoded using charset-encoding in the current code page (OK) or using unicode reference (like this). In PDF readers looks correct either way.

For the import of various PDFs (from Word, Excel, other applications) into Illustrator, an intermediate step using the Affinity Designer program worked for me - I load the PDF into it and export it as a new PDF. This new PDF imports into Illustrator in a much better state (I have a lot of accents in my language and I've found this to be a viable process for getting various PDFs into Illustrator in a meaningfully editable state).
In the attached screenshots, previews of the original PDF in Illustrator, the original PDF in Affinity Designer (in the import settings, it is advisable to turn off "Favour editable text over fidelity" - don't worry, all text - at least in this particular case, will remain fully editable) and a PDF from Affinty Designer loaded into Illustrator. Plus a PDF for testing if you want.
And yes, this particular PDF contains a mix of Arial and Calibri in one text (plus TMR as a title), but that doesn't prevent Affinity from loading it correctly and exporting it in a state that Illustrator can then handle.

I can’t say it look correctly for me...
When I zoom in into this fragment opened in Acrobat, I can clearly see the accented characters use different font, like the attached screenshot shows. Editing it there shows Calibri, while other text is Arial.
However, when a PDF is imported, I get this text in Arial to be substituted with the default font, and that’s why it’s highlighted red. It seems like this Arial embedded in PDF does not match the one I have installed in system (a default one). If I manually replace it with actual Arial, it starts looking fine, as in a PDF reader. It seems to be a specialized version of Arial, named WPCUBE+Arial in the PDF code.
Why Crossword Compiler uses it instead of the one installed in the system?
Can you change it into something with accents in the first place?Anyway, it seems like it’s no problem of Illustrator, but the app you generated the PDF with.
