An error occurred while saving the comment Illustrator is a vector-based drawing application. Smudging is something usually applied to pixel-based graphics. That’s why Photoshop does have a Smudge tool, and Illustrator doesn’t.
It offers Feather and Gaussian blur as an raster-based effect, but that’s it.
Perhaps you’d be interested in this somewhat similar request?

Reported as fully fixed in general 29.8 build.
If it’s still broken for you — please comment.

An error occurred while saving the comment This feature was requested by users, here: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/50114196 (coming from 2021)
Originally, when introduced in 29.7.0.60, the field was not focused by default — and one of the reasons behind that was the legacy access to Keyboard Increment.
However, Search is focused by default everywhere it exists in various Settings and Preferences: Inkscape, Affinity Designer. Figma (for Quick Actions, with most settings exposed)... Non-graphics apps has it like this too: Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs... Windows’ Settings, Mac’s System Preferences. Adobe is late to the party, and this usually interferes with existing workflows, when finally gets addressed (in both sides).
Another request got made (by me): http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/50114175 — and implemented in the next build (a found field / option doesn’t get focused still though).Pressing Tab four times is not good indeed — especially when this needs to be customized that often. Windows allows to use accessibility keys, and Alt+K focuses Keyboard Increment. MacOS, as far as I know, has nothing like this to offer...
I am informing the team about this. -

An error occurred while saving the comment Hmm, can’t reproduce it with the file... When I try to select all and use Object > Pattern > Make, I get the standard message the pattern is created, not an error one.
I’m seeing one mouse pattern swatch in Swatches already, without the yellow shapes.
Perhaps this file already is free from it, since you already tried to create one?Does it happen with any artwork, in any document?
An error occurred while saving the comment Please share a test file with this artwork you struggle to add as a pattern swatch.

An error occurred while saving the comment John, when this happens — are the Paste command enabled or disabled in the Edit top menu?
Does anything change if you disable Include SVG Code option in Preferences > Clipboard Handling?
Do you have any third-party clipboard managers? What about Windows Clipboard History (Win+V) — is it on or off?
Can you tell if text is involved or it happens for both text and vector art? -

An error occurred while saving the comment It seems like it... The development of these never stops, for various reasons.
Thanks for discovering and reporting this.An error occurred while saving the comment Behaves broken for me when I check in 29.7.1.
When I change the Composer to Adobe Single-line in the Paragraph panel’s flyout menu, it starts to work fine.
Can you try to toggle this option in 29.5, please, to verify this is a recent break and not just an inconsistency between the builds you have?An error occurred while saving the comment Can you please share a simple test file that works fin in 29.5, but fails to get rendered in 29.6 and above, with the fonts used packaged (if these are not default ones)? It’s hard to say what’s wrong... When I try to replicate, it behaves fine for me.

An error occurred while saving the comment Yeah, I can relate to this, Keith...
With Smart Guides it jumps and flickers if only we deviate a pixel more...
Without Smart Guides Scale still fails to show exactly when a Uniform changes to One-Axis-only: no cursor feedback, no visible lines to divide borders between quadrants... Would you mind me extracting this comment into a separate report? An error occurred while saving the comment I suppose the original report is about a different thing...
Wendy, is this still an issue for you?
Actually, I never met the problem... Photoshop had this (and they finally gave a proper option for that), but Illustrator... we still have to hold Shift to scale proportionally...
Does anyone here experience the opposite? Hold Shift for non-proportional, and proportional when nothing is held?An error occurred while saving the comment Sandi, this is a known issue, reported here:
https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/36247978-constrain-shift-key-doesn-t-work-with-smart-guid
Please try to disable the Transform Tools option for Smart Guides in Preferences. Reply back if it does 'fix' the problem, here or in that report above. -

An error occurred while saving the comment Steve, please tell more.
Does it happen with or without Smart Guides?
What options do you have enabled in Preferences > Smart Guides?
Does it behave the same way when you use Selection tool (using Bounding Box’s handles), Scale tool, Free Transform tool?
Can you record a short video to show exactly how it works when you try? -

There are now several separate requests made, based on the feedback in this thread:
1. Regarding adjustable color and opacity for 3D shadows:
https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47054086
2. Regarding presets for each tab in 3D and Materials panels: Object, Materials, Lighting:
http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47350001
All those who commented on the topic until October 16, 2023, are already added as voters there. If this is something you want to have for 3D and Materials in Illustrator — please upvote it. If possible — create new requests and bug reports about 3D, rather than commenting here inside. This will help the team to better prioritize efforts on making the feature better. As always — thanks for the feedback! It helps.
An error occurred while saving the comment Stéphane, a 3D and Materials effect is an effect, and behaves as other effect in Illustrator — you can combine and stack them in the Appearance panel, and you can save the customized appearances inside of the Graphic Styles panel.
Please try this and comment back if it works for you.
An error occurred while saving the comment Your decal got placed right in the middle of the donut, it seems :)
Drag it away from the middle a bit so that it goes on the sides! An error occurred while saving the comment Tobi, yep. This 3D effect does not work with raster images as a base object.
But the Classic 3D works still if you need it.
It is not 'was', it 'is' — still in the menu, ready to use.The speed depends on various factors. Since the new effect is raster-based (sigh) it takes more effort to calculate it if the size of your 'simple collection of object' is large, and if your Raster Effects Settings resolution is high.
But perhaps something is just broken. If you want the team to take a look at the collection' you try — please share a doc (or at least show some screenshots). An error occurred while saving the comment Arjun, there is no need to YELL.
I’ve added you as a voter to the feature request about the opacity for shadows here: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47054086An error occurred while saving the comment Rachida, probably no.
According to this page — https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/best-practices-to-optimize-cpu-usage-when-working-with-3d-in-illustrator/td-p/12480495 — working with 3D requires 32 GB of RAM and A GPU with 4 GB of VRAM. While 2019 MacBook Pro in any configuration has enough VRAM, it usually has 16 GB OF RAM (unless you have a 32 GB variation)...
Can you please open Preferences > Performance and share a screenshot of the dialog? An error occurred while saving the comment @Fajar, please tell more. What crashes, how, what do you do... describe steps, attach a test file (if possible), share screenshots.
An error occurred while saving the comment @Ryan, I’ve added you as a voter to a request about it:
http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47686964An error occurred while saving the comment A request about having the shadow bounds to be calculated automatically:
http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47523377An error occurred while saving the comment @bendertheforth
Yes, for now the 3D & Materials panel does not allow to edit values for multiple selected objects.
I am sure it happens because they have different fills and thus are treated as different appearances. The team is aware of it.Then, you can make the Eyedropper tool to pick and apply the style, if you enable 'Appearance' options in the tool’s option. This would also sample all other appearance attributes you can see in Appearance panel.
Finally, there is an existing request to have basic animation in Illustrator you can upvote: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/34505962
There is another one, specifically about SVG animation: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/42216685
As you can see, the vote count is not that high...
So it’d help immensely if you upvote stuff rather that just comment (in rather unrelated topics). Please do!An error occurred while saving the comment If you have a request or a bug report about 3D and Materials — try to search for existing ones and upvote them, or make a new report or request, as a separate entry. This will help the team to prioritize efforts.
An error occurred while saving the comment MoonMan, is it good or bad for you? Anyway, Ai gives access to both, you can use whichever one.
An error occurred while saving the comment Yes, Erik, you are correct. The direction the developers chosen for the modern effect is switched — it goes clockwise. The Classic Revolve goes counter-clockwise.
At the moment there is no option to switch the direction. However, the team is aware of this.
Thank you for raising this up here!An error occurred while saving the comment Matthew, at the moment — no, customized materials can’t be saved as presets.
The only workaround Ai allows today is to save the whole appearance of the object as a graphic style, with the Graphic Styles panel. A style also includes all other parameters of the effect: rotation, extrusion depth, light settings...
I am finally making a separate feature request about saving presets for this effect and will add you as a voter when it’s done, including all other users who mentioned it here in this thread. An error occurred while saving the comment Yerba, the Lighting tab of the 3D and Materials panel get activated only when you have an effect already applied to the object.
And as for the moment, it does not allow to adjust settings when you have several objects with the effects selected simultaneously — if their settings even slightly differ. Is it the case?
Same goes for the Properties for materials section. An error occurred while saving the comment Paul, not for the modern 3D, only for the classic one.
I encourage you to create a separate request for this.An error occurred while saving the comment Maria, there are two options to workaround this.
1. With the extruded object selected, in 3D and Materials panel, click the down arrow button in the top right corner to open Render Settings. Enable 'Render as vector' option and hit Render. This, however, will bake the shading into triangular mesh objects, which you can’t edit with Ai’s tools. The lines though will be available.
2. Instead of modern 3D use the Classic 3D, accessible through Effect > 3d and Materials > 3D (Classic) menu. These generate vector art always, but do not support modern materials and freely applied decals (but support surface mapping). An error occurred while saving the comment @Duy Lê Khánh, at the moment Illustrator does not allow to change initial values for the default material.
What you can do is to tweak them the way you want and then save the effect altogether as a graphic style using Graphic Styles panel.
This also saves the type of 3D operation, depth, rotation, perspective, and all other values... but also the material. There is no way to separate them for now to keep as partial presets. An error occurred while saving the comment Holly, you can view an unexpanded 3D object as a wireframe, live.
Select an object, open the 3D and Materials panel, hit the down arrow in the top right corner of it to open Render Settings, enable Wireframe and hit Render button below to apply settings. It’s not ideal, but it works. Please comment back if it helps. An error occurred while saving the comment The image
An error occurred while saving the comment @Elisabeth,
here is the screenshot. The 'Expand as wireframes' button is located at the very bottom of the Object tab (its header is marked with an underline) of the 3D and Materials panel. Look, near the cursor. You have to scroll or resize the panel to see it most of times. Does it help?An error occurred while saving the comment @Britt, oh yeah, it’s such a mess with this concentric circles...
In this particular case I’d go with the Classic 3D.An error occurred while saving the comment Here is an example of multic-colored cube you can study to understand the concept.
An error occurred while saving the comment Ashok, because there is no functionality to change the color of the extruded portion of a shape only. The color is derived from the color of the shape itself. There is no way to map colors to subsurfaces with this 3D effect.
However, the Classic 3D supports mapping, which can be used to map and fit a flat rectangle with a color of your choice to a subsurface you need. So far it’s the only way.An error occurred while saving the comment @CygnusRK727, aha, makes sense. Indeed, all zeroes are 'front' :)
The team is now aware of the need. Let''s see if they can offer anything. An error occurred while saving the comment @ThatSkySylvos, can you please provide a screenshot of these in Unreal, for the reference?
I personally think these buttons make noise. Instead, I’d use another approach, used is some other apps — a middle clicking a filed resets it to zero. Does it feel viable to you?An error occurred while saving the comment @CygnusRK727, having its as 'Off-axis Front' by default solves two important UX problems:
1. It matches the behavior with the Classic 3D, making it a consistent approach
2. It immediately renders the selected object so it 'looks 3d', while Front will misguide users who try it
Still it makes sense to allow users to set their own defaults. It’s a global Illustrator’s pain —defaults values are extremely tough to setup. So yeah, I agree,
The UI you propose, however, is not OK to me :) What if a user wants Left instead? What does this checkmark even mean? Why it says 'Front'? Pretty unexplainable.
I’d better had a context menu here with commands 'Make a default value' and 'Reset to original defaults'. What do you think? An error occurred while saving the comment Jerry, that was a private comment I made. You can reply those directly from your email client. But it’s OK to discuss it publicly.
The file behaves just fine for me, I am able to move the slider, it gets moved, the shape gets properly distorted, inputting values manually works too... So this must be something machine-specific, so thanks for the details you provided. I will let the team know.
As for the Classic’s slider — nothing to wonder about, they use completely different engines. An error occurred while saving the comment Gordon, this is useful enough already, and a lot of artwork has been created with the effect. But this is not a block shadow indeed, it is mostly raster based at the moment, and more generalised than just a block shadow, with a wider variety of possibilities. Sure the team is going to develop it further.
If you want to have the same block shadow you had previously in FlexiSign, you can vote here to add it in Illustrator: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/34975705-long-block-shadow-effect
Also, there is specialised paid plugin available to do exactly this, AG Block Shadow, you can use today. An error occurred while saving the comment @Mike, a known issue.
It depends on the size of the shape extruded. If you make this path smaller, the 'tessellation' effect goes away.
So no, it’s not about 'simpler shapes' :) Assumptions are dangerous.
But I can be wrong too, actually, so please check this hypothesis and reply back if scaling arrows up lead to same problem, and if scaling the rectangle down eliminates it.An error occurred while saving the comment Mona, Twist and Taper is going to be released in 27.1 in this December. 27.0.1 is one minor version away from it :)
An error occurred while saving the comment @Naleson, it’s OK :) I am seeing the file and confirm the weird scaling. I will notify the team. Thanks!
An error occurred while saving the comment @Armindo, exactly. Fit options, better texture quality, artifacts... I know the team is aware of it, is going to improve it further, but nothing more than that.
An error occurred while saving the comment @Dean, yeah, the lighting one the pure white object gets gray... Even if you crank up all the values in the Lighting tab, both Intensities to 200, — it is still stays somewhat like 3% gray. Hope the team will consider tweaking it.
An error occurred while saving the comment Eric, so far you can save 3D settings with Graphics Styles panel. This is an intended way to save settings like this. Does it work for you?
As for expand to vectors — Ai can now do that, with the 'Expand as wireframes' button in the Quick Actions section, at the bottom of the Object tab of the 3D and Materials panel. It is not perfect yet, but what enhancements do you mean in particular?
An error occurred while saving the comment Erdinç, wow, this is something unusual.
Can you send this file over sharewithai@adobe.com for the investigation?
What are you exact specs, OS and GPU?An error occurred while saving the comment Pablo, the latest version has a Perspective slider, like this one.
Do you see it? Do you use the latest version? An error occurred while saving the comment Christian, you can drag-drop the appearance, from one object to another using a dedicated Appearance panel. Not as fast as straightforward commands, Ctrl+C/V style, but it works anyway. What do you do instead?
Also, what other Perspective adjustments would you like to see? The basic slider is there, but I suppose it's not enough for you.
An error occurred while saving the comment Please give the team some more context on this.
What were you doing when this happened? I see a progress bar in the background — what was it for?An error occurred while saving the comment Neha, you can do it right now.
It the section above the Distance and Bounds you have the Softness slider. To see the effect of it you should enable Real-time preview though, a button in the top right corner.
Does it work for you?An error occurred while saving the comment @SI-BONE GraphX
Rotating by numbers — you can rotate stuff with the direct canvas widget — or by using fields. Both methods have their use, right?
Do you see the widget though?
That’s why same should be done for mapped art as well, I agree with you on this.An error occurred while saving the comment Heather, the Beta version has the 'Expand as wireframes' quick action button in the Object tab of the 3D and Materials panel to achieve this.
The result is still not perfect and has an excessive amount of points generated, and all shading is basically ignored, and z-order is messed up... but the team is going there step by step.If you want to have the former behaviour you can just stick to Classic 3D for now, until this is refined.
But the fact you came here and asked about it is great, because it demonstrates our need for it to work as we expected — with vectors (as if it’s not obvious!). Thank you so much.
An error occurred while saving the comment Marketa, what is the material you are trying to change color of?
An error occurred while saving the comment Leslie, the short answer is 'because this new graphics system does not allow to map art the same style as classic 3D can'.
These graphics are more like stamping with the pad, like in the tampography process. This partially explain why it gets distorted so much in those grooves you have on your bottle. And also it’s a technology in the making, so it’s not perfect — yet, I hope.
Thanks for the case, it will help to iron it out further. If you can, please also share this file via sharewithai@adobe.com, with the link to this thread in the body (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/938463/suggestions/44254299)An error occurred while saving the comment Jerome, Map Art in Classic 3D is still there and won't be removed, ever, I believe.
The decal graphics system for the new 3D and Material is a technology preview, the dedicated panel has a warning about it. Using a technology that is in an active development gives us users, a chance to get a better tool in the end, but also leads to a less streamlined experience while we are going there.
However, nothing has been removed recently... are you using the Beta, the Prerelease build, or the main release version?
And yeah, frustration sucks, especially when something gets broken and I can't do anything about it... so please provide some more details for the team to understand what is happening for you.An error occurred while saving the comment Mario, I'd say yes. Devs are are of this post, thanks. We had not a proper reply though, except for the major statement about the feature parity: 'new 3D is going to have all features the classic has, but better'. WIP
An error occurred while saving the comment MV, you can control the color of the light source (and it's only one of these, for now, I hope). The color of the shadow is linked to it, in a relative way. How important is it for you to have a shading color separately?
You can break apart panes, but not as effectively as in the classic 3D — yet. Open the Render Options menu in the top right corner and choose Render as Vectors (don't forget to hit the Render button). The order of panes will be a mess, but it's a start. Hope to get it as useful as the older tech.
A perspective slider is available in Beta only for now, WIP. You can try it if you want to participate in the development and help to improve it before it ships.
An error occurred while saving the comment Kristina, to enable a vector rendering mode for the modern 3D effect, you should click a small arrow in the top right corner of the 3D and Materials panel, to open Render Settings and tick Render as Vector. Don’t forget to press Render button below to apply the setting.
Then the Expand appearance produces thin black lines for edges and a non-native art (in face a triangular mesh object as a fill which Ai can’t edit, but it remains smooth, like a traditional mesh).
The z-order of these lines would not be the correct one you expect, but let’s hope it’s a work in progress and the team will sort it out later. An error occurred while saving the comment We all are very anxious about seemingly raster-driven nature of the feature. Illustrator is vector, right? But in order to embrace Substance this was the bare minimum to introduce first.
Modern 3D won’t abandon vectors, on the contrary, it’s going to be improved in upcoming releases.
This includes better stacking in vector rendering mode (which you can already enable), visibility options to not render hidden faces, mapping (hopefully streamlined). It will support everything that original 3D does (including perspective) and more.Existing 'classic' 3D is not going anywhere. You can still access it and use it.

This behavior can be toggled with Use View > Rulers > Change to Artboard Rulers command
An error occurred while saving the comment Illustrator can display rulers in two modes:
— Local rulers, when each artboard uses its own local origin point — the thing you want, page-like
— Global rulers, when artboards are treated as frames and are positioned on the common grid — the one you seemingly have enabled.
Both methods are useful, depending on the task.We can toggle these any time.
Try these methods:
— Right-click instead of double-clicking the origin (the corner intersection of rulers) and choose 'Change to Artboard Rulers'
— Use View > Rulers > Change to Artboard RulersHere’s the Help articles about these modes:

Hmm... Illustrator never allowed to deselect an object with Escape, I am sure of it.
That'’ why this request exists in the first place: Escape key should deselect any selected object — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/41179072
Escape, Space, Backspace, Enter keys are rooted deeply in how Ai work...
Escape in Ai is used to cancel the current operation (that’s why you get the dialog closed) so you can’t reassign it, or they would clash.
I’d like to know more about why you though it did work. Please tell more.
