Ah, I see, the zoom check shows it’s a normal canvas... well, then the document is definitely required.
Just one object in it with the swatch applied should be enough to test it.
You can also send this file privately to sharewithai@adobe.com (in this case mention the link to this report, for tracking it back — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/51042046)

When you say 'CAD drawing' — do you mean 'an artwork imported from a CAD app' or something else? Illustrator is not considered a CAD software, but a vector-based graphic design tool.

My guess is that the first document is created in the large canvas mode (with ×10 invisible scale factor), and the other one is normal.
To test this, try to create an artboard larger than 227 in (~5766 mm) in this document — it Ai would let you do this, it is a large canvas doc, and my guess is correct.

If not — can you save a copy of the source document, remove everything but the object with the swatch applied, and share here, so the team can try to review it?

The file opens in ~5 seconds for me, no hiccups, on a pretty average Windows 10 machine, with Intel i7 4470 3.4GHz, RAM 24GB, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti
Both Repeat objects above the artboard are live. I think putting a repeat into a repeat is what slows it all down. It works, but not very responsive.
Creating a pattern from a grid repeat object didn’t work well, the pattern’s module is now too big and slows Ai down.

So I released both huge repeats above, made some edits into your main pattern module, cleaned up some paths, for the seamless gaps between tiles... the wavy ribbons still don’t tile vertically, but it’s up to you to make them so :)
The file now is ten times lighter, and should at least open for you. Hope this helps!

A general piece of advice, based on my personal practice, — it’s better avoiding complexity. Ai would certainly allow it, and creating it is fast, but most times it’s not necessary and can choke any computer.

...an 'endless repeat grid'? ...can you share the document with it, please?
Again, is this the only file you can’t open?

Mohan, are you on 30.1.2 version? Did it start happening with the upgrade or not?
Are you able to create new files, or does Ai freeze only when opening old ones?
If you reset your Preferences — does it help?

    I see, got it.
Telegraphing modes is better with the overlapping, I think, and quick switching is another problem (I’d love to have hotkeys to force stroke/fill instead of toggling them). But still currently the Fill/Stroke buttons are the most large ones in the UI — in the two-column toolbar, rather than in Swatches/Color :)
While Swatches indeed has more space in the top part, the Color does not... these have to be consistent. Still appreciate the comment and the time.

Still not sure why having the Fill icon next to Stroke is beneficial :)
Ai paradigm still is using one of two focused, so making them displayed like this would only make it harder to see which one is active...
But perhaps you might be interested in this request instead... actually, you already upvoted it :)
Absolute mode that always sets a fill a single click and stroke with the Alt+click/right click — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/44104935
CorelDRAW-style. Am I getting it right, and 'separating' you suggest is aimed to allow to apply a color to a fill or a stroke faster, without flipping the mode first?

Anne, InDesign has a different Swatches panel, very similar to the one you offer (https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/swatches.html)... Consistency and interoperability is a goal I know Ai team pursues, but swatches in InD just work a bit differently — you can’t have a color applied to anything on canvas, without getting a swatch automatically. So InDesign never had a need to have a separate Color panel, while in Ai you can have a color used that is NOT a swatch — and it won’t exactly work with this approach.

Anyway, there are many separate requests to have them (or other panels) combined, one way or another:
    1. Merge some features of Color window into Swatches window — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/50330058 (2 vote, and this is exactly like your idea)
    2. Combine Separations Preview & Color palette — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/38885287 (2 votes)
    3. Combine the swatches and gradients panel — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/34511734 (2 votes)
A general solution is to group panels... Adding Color to Swatches give a very similar thing: a tint for the selected global/spot color (tinting is not transparency) and a list of swatches below. Sure it’s taller :) but grouping allows to have any setup.

Not sure if I get the question.
This selector indicates which of two main aspects of vector art is currently active: when the stroke chip is on top — Illustrator applies color to strokes; when the fill one is above the stroke — the color gets applied to fills.

The model you are referring too, when both are just separate chips and none of them are considered active, has been implemented in the iPad and upcoming Web versions of Illustrator — and while it made some users quite happy, some others found it irritating, since they now have the only way to change the color — via directly editing this color chip, while in desktop Ai you can use whichever method to apply the color to the active attribute.

This can’t be changed in Ai at the moment, and no plans I know about are planned. But please tell more about it from your perspective — why do you thing it’s not OK, how do you envision working with fills and strokes, if none is considered active, what is your other experience with other apps which solve the same problem?

Also, you might want to vote for a request for this alternative method for assigning attributes, used in other vector apps: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/44104935-absolute-mode-that-always-sets-a-fill-a-single-cli
This, however, won’t change the current model, but will just allow to ignore the active status, when needed.

You can view you build number in Help > About Illustrator, in the top left corner, below the Illustrator logo. If it’s 30.2.1 — then it means it’s the latest one (and not Beta).
You are on Intel macOS Catalina 10.15.7 — is it correct?

What happens when you go File > New (do you see the top menu?) or press Cmd+N? Do you get the New Document dialog?
If no — please try to open Preferences > General and check the 'Use legacy "File New" interface' option — will Cmd+N work then?

Downgrading is about opening your Creative Cloud Desktop app and installing a previous version, like described here — https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/apps/download-install-apps/creative-cloud-apps/install-previous-versions-creative-cloud-apps.html
I don’t say it would work for you, but at least it might allow for you to work while the team fixes the bug.

Also, before trying this measure, try to reset preferences first (very often it helps in may cases): https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/get-started/preferences-and-settings/set-app-preferences.html

I have to repeat the question, Rebecca :(
Do you mean the Beta build (you reported this in the Beta Bugs section), or the latest general build?
Do you mean the home screen when no documents are opened, or when a documents get opened? Do you see panels and the toolbar? Can you share a screenshot?
    Does downgrading help?
The team can’t review anything without the details: the OS, the GPU model and driver version, etc. The more you provide — the more chances the team would be able to replicate this in house and fix it.

Eric, the blue Share icon was reported separately here — Blue share circle is misplaced under the icon, https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/51000889

As for the gradient disaster... so far no reports, you are the first here (thanks). Can you share a bit more of your workspace visible? I can’t replicate this directly, so perhaps it’s limited to certain conditions.

I’d use .ait templates. It’s something Ai has been able to do since forever.
You can rename any .ai file into .ait and when launched, Illustrator would create a new unnamed document, using the full copy of the contents of the template: layers, swathes, etc. The artboards sizes and layout would be fixed too, that’s the only limitation (in some cases). Other than that it just works — when saving this new doc, Ai would ask you for a new name and location for it, so you won’t accidentally replace the template.

But you say you tried these and didn’t like it... Perhaps exactly because of the fact it only creates a new doc, and doesn’t add it all into an existing one?

Brock, I expanded your report from the sarcasm mode to the normal one. Sorry :)

Sadly, I think this should be reported elsewhere, really, because the problem is not related to Illustrator directly, but to the licensing mechanism. Reaching an agent at adobe.com might be a place to start (with a ton of patience prepared).

I personally didn’t notice the problems with using two computers at the same time recently... So it’s either something that hasn’t reach me yet or a bug.
This doesn’t mean the current policy is great and flawless (ugh).

Yep, the intended way is to tweak both UI scaling values to have the controls as large as you want them to be. Yeas, it makes the space smaller by making the panels larger.
Your interactive approach is a more narrow and more complicated solution. I can imaging it would work for some but irritate some other people with the UI suddenly changing with mouse hovering over parts of it. Also, this would have to be applied to all panels, not only Gradient — consistency.
I’m starting to think that perhaps this problems should be solved by a screen magnifier of sorts, a separate tool (I bet there are some, although haven’t searched myself).
The request stays valid, let’s see if it attracts more voted.

As mentioned here (https://x.com/asahina_waki2/status/2025756152508875184/video/1), the Contextual Task Bar does show these controls as buttons, but these are inactive with the whole path selected. So the CTB, I suppose, just directly hooks to these controls, but since Ai doesn’t allow to use them with the path scope, CTB forbids these too. Rather stupid.

This includes dedicated buttons in Control panel: Convert to Smooth / Corner, Show / Hide Handles, and especially Cut. This one missing in menus (unlike 'Connect' command being actually just Join and 'Remove'), and therefore can’t be assigned to a hotkey, meaning we can’t cut a shape into segments without a workaround with skipping one point to trigger the modality — and there is a separate request for it: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/45420019-cut-path-at-selected-anchor-points-hotkey

Trying to run the script with the document with routes and circles opened. 30.2.1 on Windows 10 (might be the difference) froze for a couple of minutes and then showed me 'All done' message, no errors thrown. Ellipses changed their colors.
What version you know was the last one to run the script as expected?

For some reason the ellipses with numbers are shifted to the left from the lines when I open the doc — take a look at the screenshot... Do these look the same when you reopen the test file you shared?

I agree, the mode is not telegraphed that well, compared to Isolation mode... Ai displays 'Opacity Mask' (even as (<Opacity Mask>/Opacity Mask) ) in the document’s tab, but it’s not enough.
I suppose you know we can Opt/Alt the mask in the panel to toggle the current view between 'normal' and 'opacity' world, same as in Ps? It won’t mark it better, but at least it’d help to see what you are doing inside of it.

To avoid sharing it publicly, you can package and send it via email, sharewithai@adobe.com (mention the report link, so they can track it back here faster: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/34005874)
Having a short video of you trying to use Backspace would help the team to verify if they successfully fail the same way at their side.

I personally notice Backspace is lagging when dealing with large amount of text, especially when any appearance applied to it, but never beyond the 'intolerable' state. So please share what you have to help getting this fixed.
