The latest Illustrator build (v29.2) now offers a way to see the distances between a selected object and an object hovered over / edges of an artboard.
- Click on the object you want to measure the distance from
- Press Opt/Alt and hover over the object that you want to measure distance to
- You can also hover over empty area to see the distance from the selected object and the artboard boundaries
Please try it and come back with the feedback.

Once the file is opened, create a way to LOCATE the offending links. A warning triangle in the Links panel would be good, so the list can be filtered for correction where required.

The Beta 28.4.0.7 now create live dimension objects, that track and follow the changes to the measured objects: resizing, rotating, moving...
As for now, moving only dimension breaks the link and expands the dimension (hopefully will change, and break the link only).
Moving an object with its related dimension currently expand the dimension as well (hopefully won’t do it either).
Please test the change and share feedback — it helps a lot!

A current 'workaround' is to disable Transform Tools option in Preferences > Smart Guides. This removes the 'uniform' guide, making the smart guides less useful, but it stops it from jittering.

Hold the mouse button down and drag out of the corner to position the zero point as required then release the button, it will snap to the artboard.

Great progress but needs to work within groups and on keylines.
Main usage for me is measuring clearance from individual artwork elements (normally grouped / masked), and the cutter guide keyline (has no fill, also can be grouped and sometimes masked).
Currently only seems to work after outlining the cutter keyline and ungrouping / unmasking artwork.
Ideally I'd click an individual artwork element within a group or mask (using the white cursor), then hover over a cutter line, to get a distance to the keyline itself (not the edge of it's stroke).
