Paragraph shading, borders, rules
Can we get Paragraph Shading and Border like InDesign?
Right now I am forced to draw a rectangle behind the text I intend to highlight.28 votes -
Make an option to show text sections with 'No break' applied to them
'No break' is a goo thing to have, but it's invisible even when Hidden Characters are on. Make something for those who have to work with text in AI to see these sections

Dynamic Text (as in Photoshop) or Capitalize (optional) & Fit (as in Adobe Spark / Express)
In Adobe Spark, when creating a Post, there's a nice feature which allows you to create a dynamic text box which capitalizes, scales, and fits the words to a text box, as you click and drag the handles of the text box. In Adobe Spark the feature is called "Capitalize & Fit". It would be nice to have something similar in Illustrator.

Paste and match style within illustrator
When copying from one text box with style A, then pasting into a text box with style B -- provide the ability to paste as style B in a single keystroke or step. Currently the default is to keep style A when pasting which requires an additional step to convert the style B.
64 votesThis is now possible with Edit > Paste without Formatting command, as per this completed request: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/31954825-paste-with-formatting-cmd-shift-v
Use Ctrl + Alt + V on Windows or Option + Command + V on Mac.
Please comment back if it does not work for you and share details.

Grammarly support for Illustrator and InDesign
Incorporating a Grammarly integration as part of the CC membership for Illustrator and InDesign would be INCREDIBLY helpful for many users. Even though these applications aren't word-processors, being able to reveiw documents for style etc. would be a huge bonus in my opinion.
428 votesWe have passed this request along to Grammarly and that while Grammarly thought it would be useful, they’re unable to prioritize it at this time.

Provide Stroke Cap Corner & Alignment control in Character Styles
I'm working in Illustrator CC 22.1 and I can't control the Caps, Corners or Alignment options of Strokes in the Character Styles Palette and I really need to. Is there a way to do this that I haven't figured out or has this issue been addressed in the most recent version? Thanks, Emily

"Hyphenate" not be the default paragraph option
By default, paragraph text is set to hyphenate words that don't fit into the text box. I suggest that the default is to have text not be hyphenated so you can click the box if you want it to be.
No one I know has ever wanted hyphenated words in text, but you have to uncheck the "Hyphenate" box from the Paragraph Palette, it's annoying to have to do that every time I make a new paragraph or paragraph style. (same problem in indesign)
447 votesStarting from the February 2024 release, version 28.3, this option is no longer enabled by default for new documents. If you had hyphenation enabled in an existing document, Ai will respect this.

Ability to switch how letters overlap
By default, when letters overlap, each following glyph is displayed above the previous one.
When using text effects or OpenType-SVG fonts, this can lead to disappointing results, like shadows on the wrong direction.
Would love to be able to toggle the order in which all glyphs of a specific text selection are rendered: above or below the previous one.
Could even use the extra space in the Character palette to include the feature button ;)

Auto Spell Check (red squiggly line like InDesign, Microsoft and other products)
Illustrator REALLY needs to have a feature (that you can turn on or off) for spell check to have the red squiggly line underneath mis-spelled words, like what InDesign, Microsoft, and many other programs have.

Changing color of selected letters
It is very difficult to change the color of a selected letters in a text if you can not see the color as it is because it is inverted when they are selected. So you are changing the color but you don't know the real appearence, , for that you have to deselect the text each time. Can this be fixed for a future version? thank you

Convert outline text to editable text
I work with a lot of files that come to me with outline text, which I then have to retype from scratch. It would be a really useful feature if outline text could be converted to editable text - could there be some kind of auto-recognition (OCR) of the outline text and generate editable text from this? Built-in OCR?
78 votesThe ability to convert outline text into live text will be available through the 'Retype' feature we recently shipped. The released version can identify fonts for now. Soon it will allow you to edit it as well. More details: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/using/retype.html

Editable Illustrator text in AfterEffects
For years we have been copy and pasting text from Powerpoint into AfterEffects because the Illustrator file does not open in AfterEffects with editable text. Takes us ages and introduces many errors.
Illustrator file text should just open in AfterEffects in 2018!

First character only find and replace
Find and replace should have the ability to only "find/replace" items that are at the beginning of a text string. e.g. if there are 50 building labels on a map that all start with 0, and one wanted to remove all those zeros... There is currently no easy way to do that and "replace all." Or if one wanted to remove "the" from the beginning of every title but not when it's in the middle of a sentence... etc.

Keyboard shortcuts for Bold and Italic text
It would be useful if, while typing/editing text, there was a keyboard shortcut to add BOLD or ITALICS - highlight the word, hit CTRL + B to bold, for example.
53 votesHappy to share that you can now format your text using the following keyboard shortcuts :
Shift + Ctrl (Win) / Cmd (Mac) + B (Bold) / I (Italic) / U (Underline)
You can also customise these shortcuts from the keyboard settings

Text block with paragraph styling
I dream for text block with automaticaly applied paragraph styling to every text in it. If you have linked text blocks, each with its own style, you can put text from a database or a worksheet and avoid formatting each row individually. Present sheet with business cards where name, address, job, etc. are linked to text boxes and you put in them data from excel. You have to format each item in the style. If the blocks carry the style of the text, it is enough to make sure each text is in its box.

A way to resize text using the baseline of the text as an anchor point.
So that's easier to match the font size of another font, or even worse, a rasterized font.

Accents / Diacritics accessibility
i'm using Illustrator and I need to type in Portuguese/Spanish so i need to use accents like áàê
Everywhere else on Mac OS if I long press the key I get an accent pop up, like this:
In Illustrator, this never shows up.
I know there are workarounds (glyphs window, other mac shortcuts and keyboard viewer) but none of those is practical.
That accent pop up is shown everywhere else in the system except for Illustrator, which is very frustrating2 votes
