placed images resolution wrong
When you place a 300ppi .jpeg or .png into illustrator it shows at 72ppi.
When you place the same image but saved in .psd it shows correctly at 3000ppi

I confirm it. The files Karl shared have the same resolution displayed when opened in Photoshop, but the broken one gets placed with the 'assumed' resolution of 72ppi, as if Illustrator fails to read the value and have to fall back to the default value.
Metadata in files differ, but both have same x_resolution and y_resolution values (sure they do, if Ps sees them). I fail to spot a difference that Ai stumbles upon though.
Thanks. Let’s see if engineers see anything weird. -

I am having the same problem, and it is not limited to placed files. You can open the file with illustrator and it happens. Image resolution is ignored and defaults to 72dpi.
Here are two 8"x10" jpg files at 269.6dpi. "not_broken.jpg" places/opens correctly and the other one places at 72dpi (29.9"x37.4") "broken.jpg" seems to have a lot more metadata if you inspect the file. It came from a client, but I opened it, filled it with black and resaved it, so both files were saved from the same instance of photoshop.
