Pattern origin
Why is the pattern anchored to the art board and not the item? I often create shapes and apply a pattern (lets say a plaid) and I adjust the alignment of the pattern so that it is equal on all sides. If I then copy the shape containing the pattern so that I can then offer the client a different color combination of the pattern, I now have to nudge the pattern of the new shape to align properly again! Because the pattern is anchored to the art board not the shape.
This behavior can be toggled in Preferences > General > Transform Pattern Tiles.
Once enabled, the pattern stays relative to the object it’s applied to, when you move or copy it between documents.
It also makes it deform if you stretch, resize, rotate, skew or transform the object, because it’s all a part of 'transformations' we can make.

Another option that happens to alter the behavior (thanks, Ton!) is Paste Remembers Layers — as found here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/illustrator-swatch-pattern-movement-issue-advanced-question/m-p/13459645#M349705

Doesn't work. Two documents, same size artboards, upper left 0,0.
Pattern still moves when pasted from one to the other.
If copied from doc2, then pasted back into the original document it moves yet again (not back to it's original position.)After starting this reply, but before posting, I discovered an ANSWER on the Adobe forum.
Expert Ton Fredericks suggested this:
"Paste Remembers Layers: Off"Forever grateful for his diligence.

NG, I had my arguments, and I provided steps, and I checked if it works (twice now).
If you have the option ticked, the pattern doesn’t nudge when you copy and paste objects filled with patterns between documents.
Both method are usable, and Ai allows to toggle them. So the problem is about knowing about the option and using it.
What are your counterarguments? Let’s talk. -

This isn't resolved. The answer provided doesn't correctly solve the problem introduced by Donna.

I tried toggling this option and it didn't work for me.

Copying and pasting a pattern filled object or text, especially when pasting into a new document, should not shift the pattern. This causes many issues when passing files to others.
