Expand greyed out for Blended variable width strokes
Create a stroke with variable width profile.
Duplicate it.
Blend he two with some steps.
Try to expand the Blend:
It's greyed out - only expand appearance is available.

True, can confirm.
You can still Object > Blend > Expand, but Object > Expand must not be disabled obviously.
