Freeform Gradient fails at transformation.
Hey I like the freeform gradient tool. But after it is applied to an object, the gradient has some major issues with resizing and rotation of the object. From what I can tell the points are not truly anchored in the object, so when the shape rotates the gradient points drop off the object, causing them to delete. It's like the gradient floats above the object. Or more frustratingly, sometimes when using the line gradient within the freeform settings, a point will delete causing the lines to cross and lock up, becoming uneditable. Usually, if you are within the gradient, illustrator will give you a warning that it doesn't allow points to be deleted if it causes the lines to cross. But it allows it if it is in some kind of object transformation. If this happens, the only work around I've found is to set the object to a non-freeform gradient, and then switch back to freeform and re-lay out the whole thing.
Any way, this is super frustrating because I've spent hours and hours redoing gradients. I need to preserve the editability of them. This is on the current illustrator version 24.0.2. please fix the bug, thanks!

Hi @Gary Crispin
Thanks for posting the Compound Path experiment/experience.
I tried to use the Freeform Gradient Tool with a Compound Shape and it makes a Gradient . But the applied effect in (my case most used is Astute Graphics Stippilism) still disappears on clicking OK when I tried it. If you have any more details or advice I'd love to have any kind of workaround while we wait (likely in vain!) to get this bug fixed.
Thanks for any pointers here. Best wishes.
I hope there will be some progress from Adobe on this soon. -

I had the same issue, but discovered that the freeform gradient was applied to a compound path. If I released the compound path, the gradient displayed correctly. Still a bug, but potentially a fix for many of you experiencing the issue.

Hi Ryan! I'm having the same trouble.
[HELP] [Free Gradient] Guys, I have a problem that I can't solve. I created a vector icon that is joined and expanded. When I apply Gradient Free it appears normal. But when I resize the object it is "losing the gradient". I recorded the screen. I've tried everything here, do you know how to solve it? The editable file is there: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aP40Rzv_zUG0MZSqTp16ZfJsnRlMLPME/view?usp=sharing Thank you guys
