Illustrator won't open .AI or Jpg files
Hi,
I'm currently using Intel Core i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz on Windows 10 with version 24.1.2 of Illustrator.
I only started using software today (so i'm very much a beginner) and I have gone to open .ai and .jpeg but a tab pops up stating 'the file "abc" is an unknown format and cannot be opened'.
Can you help me fix this please.
I can't find any answers anywhere.

Harry, are you sure that it's really a valid .ai file? Do you have the proper setting to display file extensions? Somebody could have just given it the wrong extension. Where did you get the file? Can you share it for others to try? As for the JPEG — if it is saved from WhatsApp, it won't open in Adobe apps at all (google it why). Are you trying to 'open' it in Ai or 'place' it into an opened document?
