Can't Select behind objects
The following instructions do not work. I need this function...
Select behind objects
In Illustrator, you can select objects that lie underneath other objects using Ctrl+click (Windows) or Command+click (Mac OS). The pointer changes to Select Behind on the first Ctrl+click (Windows) or Command+click (Mac OS). On subsequent usage of Ctrl+click (Windows) or Command+click (Mac OS), the selection iterates through the objects directly underneath the pointer position.

I have the same issue for yonks!!
Just thought it was me - the cursor changes to the 'direct selection tool', when i click command and click - it drives me insane as I can't select anything behind without having to lock everything down or move selections above! However, if I go into outline mode, it selects objects just fine.. so annoying@!
Click command works fine in InDesign.I have issues with the eyedropper tool in illustrator as well.. will pick a color from a font, but doesn't pick the weight of the font up, even though all the eyedropper options are checked. Can't you load the eyedropper, like you can in InDesign, and paste the info onto varies fonts or selections, it does one and then you have to go back and select what you want to copy again, makes it basically useless!
Sorry, I do love illustrator but these couple of annoying issues really does drive me insane! Any help much appreciated - thank you!

Tricia, Ai has a known bug that leads to not selecting behind when you click close enough to an edge or the center of the shape. Is it the case? Try again and check if it works when you Ctrl+click in the fill and not near edge, please? I wonder if it's the same bug I reported or a new one.

"Command Click to Select Behind Objects" is selected in Preferences and it does not work.

You should enable it first in Preferences. Did you do that? If yes, then it's a bug
