ellipse
I just downloaded and the ellipse will not open on tool bar and is not highlighted? What am I doing wrong?

It is probably hidden under the Rectangle tool. All basic shape Ai can draw are collected under one tool button. Click and hold the button to expand the tool’s menu.
If not — how does the toolbar look for you?
Have you tried to switch into and advanced toolbar with Window > Toolbar > Advanced? Does it have the Ellipse there?
