Something is definitely wrong...
You can try to reset preferences (https://astutegraphics.com/support/tutorials-and-troubleshooting/resetting-illustrator-preferences) or try the new Beta and see if it is fixed in the newer version )nut this requires installing it)
But for now you can try also to just disable the Home Screen in Preferences > General.
