Symbols don't display when mapped onto 3D artwork - Illustrator 26.2.1

Hello, I'm trying to map a symbol onto a 3D extruded object (See attached) using the new 3D interface. All I see are some black lines. No matter which symbol (even my own), what scale or rotation I use, the display of the mapped symbol does not change?
