Unknown error when placing PDF in illustrator
An unknown error occurs when placing PDF files into Illustrator. This appears to be an M1 issues as it does not occur on the Intel platforms or when I launch the Intel version on the M1 System.

Our team's upgraded to MacBook Pros M3, running Mac OS Sequoia v15.1.1, Illustrator v29.1.... PDF placing issue is still occurring/unresolved. We can not always reduce PDF quality and have not found a workaround other than sometimes placing PDF file in Indesign. This does not resolve the issue when working with existing intel created illustration files with linked PDFs.......... continued frustration at the impact this has to our workflow with no resolution yet.

I have the same problem, it's linked to Apple Silicon : https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/46795357-can-t-open-document-in-which-high-dpi-pictures-are
If you emulate via rosetta there's no issue. It has to be fixed =/

Thanks Stephen
That works for me too.
Hope the fix is in the pipeline though. -

There is a second work around. Open Illustrator through cloud by using the ellipses. Click on the ellipses and open the intel version. Seem to clear it up but should not be the final solution.

We have the same problem. Using M1 Mac, with Ventura 13.4. Illustrator 27.5.
Large files give the error as previous report.
PDF is 3x2m with 30ppi images filling the page.
I can work around by reducing the resolution from 300ppi to 150ppi, 150ppi seems to be the maximum.
Another option is to split the PDF in half and place as two elements.
Both are not ideal as another step in the workflow.
This is in the last six months.
Greater detail would help in the error message.
Looks like others have the same issues.
Hope we can have a fix soon.
Thanks
