Can't Link PDF
Cannot link PDF into an AI file. When opening the file an Unknown error is detected. Help us investigate further....
However opening Illustrator in a Intel based version on the M1 mac it will open without issue. However as this feature apparently is going to be removed it will cause major issues for me.
This needs to be fixed.

I see! Well, this is indeed something the team would have to look directly into.
As the message states, please collect the test file, upload to a storage and share a link with the team via sharewithai@adobe.com
Please also put the link to this report (http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/47709404) for tracking purposes.
Provide the exact spec your machine has: OS, GPU, driver version, SSD size, etc. —the team would need these to replicate the problem in-house. -

I'm trying to just link a PDF file into illustrator. I'm using the File>Place it's giving m the error. I have to open Illustrator using the INTEL version which will place the file fine. The Intel macs will also place the file no problem. It's the Intel mac that I keep running into this issue. It isn't every PDF or file i try to place. Just seems to be the larger file sizes or more complicated artwork.
For example if it has a lot of layer affects or very high res images embedded or linked into the file. -
Do all PDF-files cause this error? (you forgot to add a screenshot of this particular error though)
Have you tried to create a simplest document in Illustrator, save it as a PDF and place this file instead? Does it give you the same error?
How do place exactly — by drag-n-drop or using File > Place command? Is there a difference?
