Relink not working as expected
I am trying to use "relink," in the Links panel, to replace images that have already been placed into an Illustrator clipping mask.
When I click "relink," I am expecting to be able to place a link to an image I'm pasting or typing the name of, because I have a huge list of filenames I'm pulling from, and I don't want to have to navigate to the file in the UI.
However, when I type the filename, the "link" checkbox is grayed out. When I click "place," I would expect it to simply embed the file, but, instead, the "link" checkbox now becomes available and is unchecked. This is inconvenient, because it means I cannot use my keyboard workflow to get through the dialogue and must switch between mouse and keyboard times for each placement. (I need to write a script to place lots of images, but that's beside the point.)
CONVERESELY, when I navigate in the filename list to the actual file I want to place and CLICK on it, it automatically activates the "link" checkbox and it is checked by DEFAULT, which is what I want, but I don't think I should have to do this every single time I want to place something, especially when I'm placing 20-100+ images at a time.
Furthermore, the options for which images to replace are limiting, because it asks me if I want to replace one image or all, but it only allows me to include the images that are identical to each other. I then have to select a new set of images to replace them if they are not duplicates of the original image. this workflow is very clunky. Please fix it! Thanks. :)

True! Pressing Enter once after pasting the name of the file into the 'File name' field does not close the dialog but locates the file in the folder by the typed/pasted name — and the options above become available again. I can toggle the 'Link' option with Alt+L (praise be the accessibility keys on Windows).
The initial state of the option is 'disabled' however, and it differs from its state if I click the same file in the dialog. This is odd (and should be studied), but still allows to avoid lifting hands from the keys.As for the second part — please tell more, with some examples, if you can.
