Need More Info  ·  Yogesh Sharma responded

Please share your thoughts on the following:

    1. Would it make sense to have a separate desktop app, just to create charts, and bring them inside Illustrator or InDesign? It may not be on cloud.

    2. Or would you rather have us work on building it within Illustrator?

    Thanks
    Yogesh

I agree with most of the comments here. There have been problems with the charting tool that have existed for far too long:

    • Inability to scale with other objects
    • Inability to handle data with commas, dollar signs, etc.
    • Inability to maintain styling after data changes
    • Lack of data labels
    • Strange limit on size of numbers it can handle
    • Errors in size of objects the charting tool draws

I would be fine with a stand alone charting program but probably would favor keeping it in Illustrator.

Having the chart linked to external data would be fantastic (Excel but also Google Sheets and other formats.)

Adding more chart types would also be a great update (Sankey, tree, bullet ... dare hope for Coropleth and other location-based chart types?)

The intended solution for this is to use Global Edit feature.

Copy the object you want to replace with, then select one of many copies you want to replace and use Select > Start Global Edit command.

Using Shift, unmark those copies you don’t want to affect.

    Isolate the targeted copy.

Paste the copied object and position it correctly relatively the old object.

    Delete the old object.

Exit the isolation and end Global Edit.

It may sound convoluted at first, but once you master the method, you’d be able to easily replace almost anything.

Global Edit has its limitations: it doesn’t work for images, text objects, clipped masks, linked objects, and third-party plugins.

Read more about it here: https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/global-edit.html

Thank you very much, Sarah. So far that has solved the freezing problem. Seems to have made the problem of Illustrator recognizing mouse clicks worse but I can live with that if it avoids the freezing problem.

I have this exact problem and it is very frustrating. Almost every function requires a second mouse click to get Illustrator to recognize the mouse click. This happens only in Illustrator. I do not see this problem in Photoshop or other programs. Happens with my mouse, trackpad or graphics tablet.

    Hi Wes,

Thanks for explanation. I got it. This is a feature request, so I am moving this thread to feature request section.

    Thanks

I guess if you want to classify it as a feature rather than a bug, sure.

    Hi, Anish-

I might be confused about the question. Initially I thought you were asking why I would want to override the axis values (There are multiple reasons for that. Often it's because I want different markings than the default (fewer or more hash marks.) Sometimes I'm working with a series of charts and I want all the values axis to line up. Occasionally I'll want the top hash mark to be lower or higher than the default.)

But now, rereading your comment, I'm wondering if you're asking me why I want the axis values to be so much lower than the data numbers? If that is your question then I think you misunderstood my problem. I DON'T want the axis values to be that much lower than the data. But Illustrator will not let me set the override values to be inline with the data. It appears to have a cap on how high the axis numbers can be set when doing an override. Which is why the chart I sent you has the lines riding so far off the artboard. I don't want that but that is what Illustrator demands.

I have emailed the file along with the data set I used. It was just a quick chart using the default line chart tool in Illustrator.

I recreated the chart from the data I was a having a problem with. I don't see any function here to post files in replies. How should I share it with you?

There are tons of bugs in Illustrator that drive me crazy. I have noticed that selected items cannot be moved to another layer if the item is in a group. It has to be move outside of the group and then can be moved to another layer. Very frustrating such a simple function requires extra steps.

The solution is pushed into Global Availability build 28.6.

The Previewed Page is now the default option for the dialog.

Here is an updated Help article:https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/importing-pdf-files.html

Congratulations, folks! Took us 5.5 years to get it!

It is also frustrating if you have a layer in the layers panel selected which is locked and you then try and select text in a text box on a non-locked layer using the text tool. Illustrator will not allow that -- it forces the user to select the layer the text box is on first before selecting the text.

I have had this happen often and is probably an intentional design but I think it is bad design. If I have two text boxes that are overlapping but the text in the boxes is not overlapping, the text tool should give priority when selecting text to more than which text box is above the other text boxes. If I have a text box already selected it should give that box priority over a text box that is above it. Or if you try to select text in a text box with text but a text box above it with no text in the selection area it should select the text in the text box that has text in the selection area.

Yesterday I was attempting to edit text in a text box but Illustrator kept putting the cursor in a slightly overlapping text box that had no text in the area of my selection. I was dragging a selection from outside the overlapping text box to an area that was covered by the overlapping text box. It is these sorts of minor time wasting work arounds that make Illustrator so frustrating to work with.

I agree. The transform tool causes me to waste so much time having to undo and try again multiple times for each transformation. I have noticed that the problem is worse when using a graphics tablet as opposed to using a mouse for some reason.
