Template files (.ait) use/show the Adobe Swach Exchange (.ase) icon in Windows Explorer
It's pretty much what the title says, .ait files show up in Explorer with the .ase icon. Everything works as expected though, double clicking it will open a new file in Illustrator, so this is purely a cosmetic issue.
does a reinstall help? for some error it seems your registry entries have gone corrupt.
Please accept my sincere apology for the inconvenience. Please get in touch with us at any of the other support channels – https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html . Since this is not a generic issue that we can reproduce at our end, we will need someone to look into your machine to figure out what is going on here.

No, reinstalling doesn't help. This happens both on my desktop, which was rebuilt sometime ago so Illustrator was installed from scratch, and on my Surface Pro.
Also, changing the registry key mentioned on my other comment fixed the issue, but only until an update to Illustrator happens. Then the key is reset to the incorrect value.

This is actually a bug on the installation.
I've fixed it in the registry, but every time a new version, or even an update, is installed, the fix gets reversed...You need to change the following registry key:
Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Adobe.Illustrator.Template\DefaultIconBy default it has the value
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 2020\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe,20Notice the 20 at the end. This is referencing the wrong icon.
You need to change it to:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator 2020\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe,19Then logout or reboot so the icon cache can refresh.
Can you guys fix this on the installer so I don't have to change it all the time?
Thanks! -
