Illustrator 2019 Freeform Gradient and compound paths not quite right
When applying a freeform grad to a compound path, the effect struggles to jump a gap between paths, leaving odd results. If you create a path with a "hole" in the middle and create grad its OK. Move the whole fully out of the enclosing shape and its blank, move back into to cross border line and it works correctly with overlap creating hole.
In the attached file, the four squares are a compound path. Top right shows standard linear gradient covering the whole shape. The top left fort squares are supposed to share a freeform grad copied from the shape below. This results in one green square and three white, which if you move sometimes loses the green too!
Illustrator v23.0.1 (the redraw freeze fix pre-release, evident in 23.0.0 also)

I have the same issue. I’m using the freeform gradient on outlined text (compound path) for a logo. I have no problem adding points/changing colours, however the gradient will not scale with the compound path - depending on the percentage of the scale the gradient either drops/loses some coloured points, all points disappear completely (left with no fill) or the an unknown error occurs [stex]. All my software is fully up to date as is my OS... please can someone help on this issue?

Freeform Gradient does not work on a Compound Path (e.g. an outlined text or logo). Ai doesn't give any feedback on the problem, it just does not work.

This is a ridiculous problem. To say to a pro designer that shape doesn't aesthetically work for this tool is everything wrong with developing pro software. We're talking vector shapes 101 and now you're saying a gap of nothing is a deal breaker. Well I don't buy it. Look at this image, my gap tolerance is identical but it works in some areas not another? That tells me the math is possible you just need to figure it out instead of releasing half-baked features that truncate pro work flows. http://www.gsartchive.com/Temp/buggy.png

In Illustrator 2019, freeform gradients were unable to render in complex compound paths. I was attempting to add a freeform gradient within a compound path/grouped object set of leaves (about 20) of various shapes and sizes. I had used compound paths to add a freeform gradient to two objects previously (although with a few bugs — see http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/35851069), expecting the gradient to render. Although it sounded as though my computer was working hard to process the effect, nothing rendered after 5 minutes and so I gave up, resorting to a clipping mask solution instead.
