I have used Illustrator for 30 years in print publishing. Recent updates broke the "Export As" function. When "Use Artboards" is checked, it incorrectly includes bleeds from "Export for Screens" settings.This destroys the print workflow. "Export As" must work independently and crop files strictly to the artboard boundaries. Please fix this bug immediately. illustrator 2026, macOS Tahoe 26.5.2

I have this little displeasure everytime I have to export the artboards to a image format. On older versions, the bleed were always included, then out of nowhere it was excluded, except for tif format.

I'm on version 30.6 and unlike mentioned, theres no on/off switch on exporting dialog.
Adobe should follow a standard between its programs. In Indesign, there's an easy checkbox when you are exporting. Illustrator should follow this.

I make use of both modes - with bleed, to flatten complex graphics that generates artifacts on pdf, and without bleed, for exporting images for client review.

The ON/OFF setting of “Include Bleed” in File > Export > Export for Screens... is also reflected in Export As....
The “Include Bleed” option has been available since CC 2019 (version 23) and behaved this way from that version onward.

Additionally, it can be controlled via scripting.

In illustrator version 29.0, when exporting artwork images, it will export artwork together with the bleed size. I hope we can freely choose whether to Export artwork with the bleed.

I found the reason! Try and see if you have "include bleed" checked for "export for screens"!
If so, the "export as" also includes the bleed.

Yes please. In the course of a year, I need this for over 2,000 documents. If I do a catalogue (hi res CMYK files) that's easily an extra 500 documents/times I need this for.

Removing the bleed temporally to export, leaves too much room for error if the file is accidentally saved and sent to the suppliers wrong.

Also the balance of the design looks very different when bleed is left on. Important to have jpgs without bleed.

It would be great to have the feature in an Export window (in one of the two attached).

The only way to remove the bleed is to remove document bleed temporarily or remove it manually in Photoshop.

We remove bleed before we add the artwork to our catalogues.

Most of the time, Export As > Use Artboards works as intended, but occasionally it exports the bleed area around the artboard. The workaround is to duplicate the artboard and replace the original with the duplicate, which then works although the artboard settings were exactly the same so I shouldn't have had to do this. Seems to happen more or solely on my personal PC running Windows 11, vs my work PC running Windows 10, both running up-to-date Adobe CC Illustrator. I've just updated to Illustrator 26.2.1 and now I cannot export PNG or JPG files with bleeds.
• I'm using File > Export > Export as... function.
• There is a 9 pt bleed set up in the Document settings
• "Use Artboards" option is selected on the Export dialog window.

I'm on macOS 12.3.1.

When working with an Illustrator file that uses bleed settings, in my case the artboard is 11.75" x 3.75" with 0.125" bleeds, when I export out as a PNG and select 'Use Artboards' I'm expecting the resulting PNG file to exclude the bleed settings ... it does not, why? In a previous Illustrator version, I remember this option working as expected.

In regards to the resulting PNG, how do I prevent the exported PNG file to have '-01' appended to the filename? It is irritating that I have to manually rename files after export.

Also, if I 'Save a copy' as a PDF the 'Use Artboards' isn't selectable, why? How is it that someone can save an Illustrator file to a PDF, for someone else to review, and not include the bleeds if the 'Use Artboards' isn't selectable ... assuming that 'Use Artboards' works correctly (one may have to deselect the feature to keep editable in Illustrator if the bleeds aren't kept)?

Is 'Use Artboards' known to be buggy at the moment?

Used to have an option in the export dialog box.
I need to export my labels to wrap in Adobe Dimension w/o the bleed I set in Illustrator for printing purposes.

it is not only pngs but anything you export. If you have a picture over the artboard and it is not over the entire bleed setting you get white lines down the bleed area as well.

Todd, the point of bleeds is so when we send the files to the printer, the color will bleed over so they can be ganged up on the large format printers. This enables the printers to have a variable width and height in case the paper expands.

Without the bleeds, we wait for money because the printers have to reprint until they look perfect. So doing as you say means we got to set up two different documents for every document we need to go to a printer or put it out on the web.

If document is setup with bleed (red box around artboard), then bleed will be exported as part of PNG. If you remove the bleed settings, then artwork will be correctly cropped to the artboard.

I can confirm this is happening to me as well. VERY FRUSTRATING!

When you export png from document with bleed, even if you select the "use artboard" option, the png files have bleed included.
